Whats your thoughts on a Draco AK47?

This doesn't answer the question about 922r compliance, but it does answer the question "can I put a VFG on a pistol?" The answer seems to be "not without registering the gun under the National Firearms Act."
Tech branch thinks otherwise:

As I said, "conjectural".

In skimming the letter, the only question about a foreward grip specifically references the Magpul Angled Foregrip.

Evidently BATFE sees some sort of difference between the angled foregrip and a traditional style vertical foregrip, and according to this letter, a Magpul Angled Foregrip is acceptable, but according to the BATFE website, a vertical foregrip makes the gun into an NFA item.

If you are debating between a draco and an underfolder AK, I'd get the underfolder AK. Never shot a draco, but I have an underfolder AK and I love it.

On a side note, that's pretty sweet about the Magpul Angled Foregrip. I might look into putting one of those on my PLR 16. I wanted a VFG, but didn't want to spend and extra $200 to put a $30 accessory on the gun

Or, for a final answer, one could consult the people who run the regulatory agency in charge of enforcing those laws and take their advisement to heart.
. . . except this method has been proven to produce diametrically opposing "advisements" regularly.

A Final Answer would only be given by the Supreme Court of the United States, either in an opinion or a denial of cert. after a trial (possibly for a declaratory judgment) and appeals.

A formal ATF opinion letter with your name on it is the best permission slip you can have without a ton of time and money. It's certainly better than what the head of the BATFE or DOJ tells you informally.

There are some great threads on the Draco over on Gabe "Billy Mays" Suarez' Warrior Talk forum.

There's plenty of "great threads on the Draco" right here on THR, thank you very much, where you'e not brainwashed into spending at least 5x the price for something just to validate one's existence.
I'll probably regret asking, but what was this bunny trail all about?

Sounds like someone who doesn't know Gabe and obviously hasn't trained with him

Personally, the only reason that I would buy one is to turn it into a SBR. Probably a whole lot easier to start with a Draco than with a full size AK variant. It looks like an SBR Draco would make one heck of a short close quarters rifle. I'm definitely thinking of buying one to have it turned into a SBR here in the near future.

Just picked up my Draco-C. No canted sights, no mag wobble, pretty smooth action, missing cleaning rod - so ill have to find one of those. One of the mags looks like it went through a war and then was dragged through hell. The other mag is in like new milsurp condition. Started cleaning all the cosmoline off this morning

Here are some pics of the draco from my iphone... the date on it is 1971

I considered getting a Draco, but I already own a homebuild amd65...It is only a couple inches longer than the Draco, has a vertical foregrip that is clearly legal, and has a folding stock which is compact, reliable, and folds out of the way...with the stock folded, it is very compact indeed.
So I saved my money.

Ive handled a number of the Draco pistols. I would say check it out before you buy it. The last one I looked at was horrible. Front sight way way off. The rear sight was crooked on the barrel and the sight leaf was warped so much it looked like a joke.

I dont think this is a bad idea for someone that needs a compact weapon. If you cant SBR it, then a green laser would be what Id get for it.

Shot the draco for the first time today. WOW was that fun! Pretty darn accurate and I wasnt really trying. Huge fireballs, not bad recoil, load very very loud. lots of people asked about it at the range.

very glad I bought it =)

cant wait to get a full size ak now.

Here's my Draco C:

MYDRACOC.jpg

She’s wearing a no name birdcage flash hider, Bulgarian AK74 wood handguards, modified Russian PBS-1 adjustable rear sight, Ergo AK Classic pistol grip, VM-1 sling plate, Blackhawk Dieter CQD sling, and a Chinese 30 round mag.

And, her range results:

It was cold and windy that day sos I only loaded 5 rounds to try out my newly installed PBS rear sight (previously laser boresighted on battle sight position)
25 yards offhand using the sling as a cheek rest, off hand pushing forward on handguard arm straight, trigger hand pulling back on pistol grip. Pretty darn accurate at pistol shooting distance, for a so called worthless range toy with open sights shooting so called crap ammo in my opinion! I discovered that "We don't need no stinkin buttstocks" to shoot the Draco accurately and don't knock em till ya tried em.

Smiling Bob :D

Don't have one but I can easily see a Draco as a practical housegun for the bedside, livingroom or kitchen etc though I personally prefer a regularly stocked weapon.

I don't care for the draco as it is just a couple of inches away from folding AK, but I would like to get a mini draco.

Rather than answer that directly, I'll just repeat the old line:

IF when you grab your shot timer and targets and hit the range -- and you run realistic defensive scenarios against the clock -- any version of a stock-less pseudo-rifle or PGO shotgun is the gun that lets you put the most, most accurate shots on target, fastest, then make that gun your defensive weapon of choice.

If it isn't, leave it in the range-queen box and stick with whatever weapon DOES get you the fastest, most accurate hits. "Kewl" doesn't matter when your or your family's lives are on the line.

Each according to his or her abilities. I am even less a fan of pistolgrip shotguns.

Dracos are an inexpensive way to be half-way to something useful.

Add a tax stamp and folding stock -- now you're talking!

Or, buy an AMD-65 (12"bbl) @ $399 wait for the tax stamp, get a dremel tool and cut the spot weld, and BOOM you have an SBR with a stock already on it.

Thoughts?
Say good-bye to your night vision when you pull that trigger.
Other than that, a lot of fun to shoot. I just don't have a use for one.
JMHO.

Dracos are just this side of useless

Not once you pay the $200 tax and add a stock to "manufacture" a Short Barreled Rifle. I'd say mine is my sweetest shooting AK.

Strict application of this would have us all using .22LR pistols with a Trijicon RMR tritium fiber optic sight.

Absolutely, you want one engraved ROMARM/CUGIR ROMANIA, not a gun to buy on-line shopping by price. I too looked as several before buying, and I paid a bit more for the one I brought home than I could have for several of the ones I didn't.

I liked my Draco so much, I'm waiting on the stamp to SBR the mini I bought just before Xmas. Its going to be harder to get a red dot mounted.
