My serious answer is "Because I enjoy them, and their histories, not to mention that they hold value well".

My answer for people I'm more familiar with is "November 4th".

"ME? No, actually I only have one for each of my personalities. Which one do you think you are talking to now?" :neener:

Because when the SHTF (read, government crackdown on liberty), and I have anti's knocking on my door admitting that they were wrong, I'm not going to be gloating and crying "I told you so."

I'm going to hand them an extra rifle and a few boxes of ammo, teach them to shoot a few rounds, and ask them to follow me to the front.

The question that I get is generally, "How many guns do you own?" as I do not advertise how many I have.

I do not enjoy conversations with disbelievers. I tell them, "You don't need to know that."

My philosophy is that you cannot convert the opposition. I have found that these people will generally engage me in conversation to prove to themselves the moral superiority of their belief system.

If a person comes up to me and says something that makes me believe that they want to learn about shooting, I will do anything that I can (within a reasonable expectation) to help them. However, if they view me as a potentially violent curiosity because I own a gun, I do not speak with them.

This is also usually the follow-up question to "How many guns do you have?" and the precursor to "Are you carrying a gun right now?" and "Do you have guns in your house/apartment?"

To the first one, I don't think you should ever give a precise answer. I usually say "more than one" and leave it at that. I mean, if they'd asked me how much money I have in my bank account it's not like I'd tell them the exact number there, either.

If you give a definite answer one time, it becomes a benchmark for future questions. If you make it known that you won't answer the question then they can't pin you down. The closest any of my friends can say as to how many I how many I've let them shoot when I took them to the range. Even that's not very helpful, as I've let it be known that I've sold some of the ones I used to use, bought new ones, and that some of them are ones I've borrowed from my dad.

I tell them "I ain't Micheal Jordan so I shoot well instead of play basket ball. Shooting is my hobby and it's pretty boring if you only have one firearm to shoot with. If it was all for defense my pistol and shotgun would be enough. Most of it is just plain fun!"

Then I offer to take them to the range if they would like. They sometimes accept the offer.

1911 TURNER - ""You do understand that the notion of need-based justification for ownership is Socialist/Communist ideology...Right?"

That is precisely what the "need" ideology of the Left liberals, or "Progressive Fascists," is.

Only Big Brother and Big Nanny can determine what is your "need," and they will dole out to you what they think is sufficient, not what you'd like to have... or have worked to gain.

"From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." Karl Marx.

because its my right to have one. and "when seconds are precious, cops will be there in minutes" ok also "i would rather have one all my life and not ever need it, that need it and not have it to use."

My line is usually thus:

"Shooting is a hobby that I enjoy. It teaches discipline and improves hand-eye coordination. A firearm is also the best means of self-defense available at the present. And I have a human right to defend myself and my loved ones and this right is reiterated within and guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment to the Consitution of the United States."

If the individual presses me as to why I have so many guns as opposed to just one I usually smile and say:

"Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."

I think y'all have heard that one before.

historical value (imma C&R guy) + investment value (finding rare stuff is cool) + mechanical value (imma gear head, i love to see how things work) + fun to shoot stuff

never been asked. not too many people know about my hobby, except my close freinds of like mind

if i was asked my reply would be " when you pay my mortgage you can comment on how i spend my money"

I see that many people seem to have been asked this question by antis who are making some kind of accusation.

Like one respondent said, I don't get asked this by strangers because I don't advertise my hobby much. Those who ask are friends of friends, or someone who has earned my trust enough to allow them into my house. In this case try not to be confrontational with my answer because I am trying to educate.

I guess if I was confronted by some anti who had no business asking I'd say that "It must be nice to be so good at minding your own business that you have time to mind mine, too. Thank you for trying to help."

I fall somewhat in line with Dismantler, The question that I get is generally, "How many guns do you own?" as I do not advertise how many I have.
I do not enjoy conversations with disbelievers. I tell them, "You don't need to know that."

Depending on the feel I get from the person my answer changes, my 'coined' phrase is "If I'll never tell my wife how many women there were before here, how likely do you think it is I'll tell someone honestly how many guns I own." After which I smile my SEG (Sh&% Eating Grin).

Other times if it is an anti, "If I don't let the powers-that-be know why should I tell you, maybe I only got one and maybe I got more than a hundred, the only persons that needs to know is me, myself, and I." (I've gotten blank looks of horror to which I respond with my custom Clint Eastwood 'High Plains Drifter' dead stare).

As a lawschool student in the South, a southern boy myself, I get a lot of Yankees and Commiefornians with baseless and uneducated ideas and whom have no remorse for espousing them. My professor did get a kick when I said "well my collegue from the North is a 100% wrong about banning guns and the subsequent reduction in crime that has never once happened in the hundred plus years of governments foolishly thinking that the sword brings violence and not the person", we are both hardline southenners.

They're prettiful.

You ever wonder why I have 18 Bicycles? And 6 cars?

When you respond to questions like this, remember that people have different motivations for asking (not to mention that not everyone was brought up with basic standards of politeness). For instance, some people may be asking how many guns you have simply because they want to have their own guns but have no idea what's reasonable. In most cases, sarcasm or rudeness isn't going to really help the other person out. Yes, they need to know that it's an inappropriate question, but there are ways of deflecting the question so that they're not only educated but not made to feel embarrassed.

If you know the person fairly well, invite them shooting with you. That's an indirect way of answering their question: if I let you shoot two revolvers, a pistol, and three rifles then you may guess that I have at least six guns. It also helps them to see that different guns are for different purposes (maybe you have a cowboy revolver, a .22 handgun, a defensive handgun, a .22 rifle, a military surplus rifle, and a hunting rifle, for instance).

It also occurred to me that, in today's climate, responses like "What color underwear are you wearing?" and "How many people did you sleep with before you met your spouse?" could be seen as sexual harassment. Maybe questions more on line with "How much money do you have in the bank?" (if you must answer a question with a question) would be better.

why do you "need" a big screen plasma TV, or a brand new basstracker fishing boat, or a new corvette?

if we need a reason to buy anything, we would all live in 1 room houses with a sink, stove and a bed.

why do i have guns? because i enjoy them, because where i live a guns is a standard piece of equipment, just like a 4X4 truck, or a tow rope, and a tractor and a barn.
