Per Washington State law:

RCW 9A.16.050
Homicide — By other person — When justifiable.

Homicide is also justifiable when committed either:

(1) In the lawful defense of the slayer, or his or her husband, wife, parent, child, brother, or sister, or of any other person in his presence or company, when there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design on the part of the person slain to commit a felony or to do some great personal injury to the slayer or to any such person, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished; or

(2) In the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, in his presence, or upon or in a dwelling, or other place of abode, in which he is.

Burglary in the first degree.

(1) A person is guilty of burglary in the first degree if, with intent to commit a crime against a person or property therein, he or she enters or remains unlawfully in a building and if, in entering or while in the building or in immediate flight therefrom, the actor or another participant in the crime (a) is armed with a deadly weapon, or (b) assaults any person.

(2) Burglary in the first degree is a class A felony.

So in my state, as soon as it happens.

Thanks for your posts. Fortunately I got out of there with only a macbook pro stolen. Next year I imagine it to only be worse over there, especially right around now when everyone is moving in and leaving doors unlocked.

I'm moving much closer to campus so it will be a nice change. Those few weeks it seemed like it wasn't an "if" but a "when" my house would be broken in to and I was using the forum to get some replies as to what the majority of you all would do in that circumstance.

Next year there is a much higher concentration of people around me 360 degrees so a .45 would be very risky.

I had not heard those burglary tactics of politely knocking and they were very interesting, thanks for that. The front door will be the only mode of entry to my spot next year as it is on the second floor. Happy days are here again.

Good and get a 12 or 20 gauge pump gun.
