Securing the house

I'm sure it will be secure, but some walls eventually fail....

This one probably will too, long after I am dead :neener:

The structural engineer who drew up the plans did not know I would hit bedrock, so it was designed to be "floating" in the dirt. And he assumed it would be a perfectly straight fence of infinite length, as opposed to the arcs and corners. And I think he over-engineered it assuming I would cut corners. Instead I have beefed it up with every opportunity.

One next door neighbor loves it, the other doesn’t. The rest of the neighbors run from loving it to tolerating it. Because my lot is triangular, it really does not look to obvious from the front. When it gets further along I’ll show more pictures.

Still, your setup cries out for a dog.

I generally agree. I think that when the wife does get pregnent and stays home, the right dog will come along.

John,

... a canine supremacist? Moi? Hardly!

It is well known among Fila people that a small active alert dog (like a terrier, though Fila people usually prefer the Fox Paulistinha or Terrier Brasileiro) is necessary around the house also- 'to wake the sleeping Fila' as it is commonly said. Filas are great protection dogs, but they do tend to sleep soundly sometimes.

It just happens that our "small active alert dog" at present is a Brittany... the terriers will come later.

An attack terrier pack, to go along with two or three grown Filas- ought to be an intruder's worst nightmare!

Holy Smoke

Wow. I am not worthy.

Now all you need are some auto-tracking lasers, modernized versions of the Andromeda Strain gizmos.

Or you could just hook up the lasers to CC cameras and remotes, like a video game.

Your real name isn't Burt Gummer, is it?

:D

Thats a good looking fence. Have you considered Stucco or Dirvet (like the artificial textured masonry on Taco Bell) with brick pilers to break it up? That could be a very attractive fence.

PS: A catwalk and guntowers would be nice.

Hehe... just giving you a hard time, Lee.

It is SO rare that we get the opportunity to use the term "Canine Supremist" in our culture. When you get a shot, you just HAVE to take it. :)

I'll also chime in for dogs to me they even take precedent over an alarm system as there is no "human error" and the maintanence is much simpler as you don't have all the wires, codes and such. To me a couple dogs is a very strong deterrent(assuming sufficent size)

That being said too me the dogs must be inside the home as 1 it would prevent poisoning and 2 they get more protective.

Again I'm not knocking alarm systems I just think a couple gaurd dogs are better

what are the columns on the left side of the pics for?

I had the pier driller drill me 5 piers for a future patio roof.

The forms are up today for 70 more feet of wall but with last night's rain the concrete plant shut down for today. So we pour tomorrow.

So you spent over $9000 to make your neighbors think your a jerk?

I think kindrox is more concerned about making the bad guys think he is a jerk - to bad guys.
He makes an impressive argument.

Nice wall.

Most places I've lived, my neighbors would stand there and watch me get killed because they lacked the spine to do anything.

My neighbors could think I was the Queen of France for all I care. If it keeps my family safe, I am happy.

If they think I am a jerk for that, it likely keeps them away as well.

In my book, that's ANOTHER benefit.

I have gone out of my way to make the fence as attractive as I can, both for me and for the neighborhood at large.

However, as others already pointed out, I am not particularly sensitive to their concerns. If anything "went down" at my house requiring outside help, the only other guy on the block of any use is the neighbor across the street who keeps a loaded AK47 ready. He loves the fence.

The ONLY person not happy with the fence is the one next door neighbor, and as far as I can tell her issue was more about the speed at which the fence went up (slow).

But yes, I would guess that 9/10 thugs hate the fence.

I spent the money for my home's security. Sure, $9,000 could have gone a LONG way to making the home itself that much more secure. But this way my wife and future kids can enjoy both the house AND a large yard. Top the property off with a dog, and we can enjoy a very large living area in security.

My wife is armed. However I believe that fence + gun has made the house and yard much more secure for the future family than gun only.

Guns react, fences deter, dog's do both.

I don't mind naysayers. Trust me on this one, to do a project like this you have to have thick skin as the project is in progress. Most people have zero vision so until the project comes together and in the end and speaks for itself, people without vision attack what they don't understand.

Cool fence (read wall). I agree that helping some vines grow over it so it looks like a giant hedge could end you up with some beautiful property in the long run.

That said, I can't say I approve much of the stars you have embedded in the walls, but then again that is a personal taste issue. To me, they bring about thoughts similar to sticking a sickle-and-hammer emblem on the walls every 15 feet.
But hey, my background makes me a little sensitive to communist symbols, especially on compound walls, so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt there.

Way to spend your time and money on something worthwhile. That 9k could have easily been spent on something much more foolhardy.

I love it! Get some bougainvillea or climbing roses going and it will be downright pretty. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that you've come up with a great solution for over penetration. Any round capable of going through that is probably overkill for intruders. ;-)

I can see that. However a long wall with no "texture" is not attractive. In Texas the Texas star is very popular.

That 9k could have easily been spent on something much more foolhardy.

In my opinion most people have plenty of money. It's simply invested poorly/spent foolishly.

There was a lady recently griping to my wife about her family’s financial difficulties (my wife owns her own small store and this lady wanted to become a vendor). Then I see her driving a brand new Cadillac Escalade.

Sympathy switch OFF.

you've come up with a great solution for over penetration

Somewhere there is an internet thug forum with a new thread "What round for penetrating 6 inches of concrete?"

I can't say that I see any real down side to having a goodly portion of the house protected from stray bullets. If you want to spend your $$$ that way more power to you.

And let me introduce you to my ol' buddy Primo. It happens he lives out your way, kindasorta (hey, it's Texas), I know his boss lady and if you all decide you want enough dog to justify all that fence, I'd talk to Tina if I were you. Go to http://www.nodibkennels.com/ , and read up some. Tina is one of the best all round dog trainers I have ever seen, and Primo is... well, he's really something.

Then go to http://www.southlandfarms.com/html/are_you_ready_for_a_fila_.html and think about those questions a lot. Minida is good people, she knows Filas as well as anyone I've ever seen, and she and her neighbor Brenda Bagwell ( http://www.eanlo.com/ ) have done a great deal for the breed.

Filas aren't for everyone by any means, but if you are a Fila person inside and just don't know it yet, you'll never want any other kind of dog after you raise your first one.

Hope you never get a burst water main, or you're going to be the next community pool.

Nice work, though.

Well, I would guess you have little concern about "overpenetration" issues anymore.........! I love it!.

Not many CC&R's, let alone zoning regs, will allow such a fence! Mind you, I like it a lot. It speaks to me in a kind of New Brutalist/retro Berlin kind of way. But it's not a solution for most homeowners.

I think it looks great and it will be very attractive with the addition of some climbing flora. Something that covers the whole wall with greenery and flowers.

Most homes in south america (where I have been) have a large concrete wall on the perimeter of their properties too. 100% of them have broken glass embedded in the top too. usually they have one steel entry door for people and one big steel door for a car.

I'm curious how a wall constructed like yours would stand up to a vehicle crash (accidental or one intended to breach your wall)

some platforms for sentries would be kind of cool or peepholes that could be obscured with plants later.
