Here is my problem. I bought a rifle from Montana Rifle Company back in 2003. The customer service has been good and they have tried to help me. Unfortunatley, they still can not get the rifle correct.

It's been back to the company four times now, on the second receiver, and stock rebedded several times. The first receiver was out of round even though it was supposed to be lapped and trued and never fed properly. After the third trip and a call from my gunsmith they replaced it with a new receiver.

The new receiver does not lock the bolt handle down when it is supposed too. This is after their gunsmith went through it to make sure everything is fine. There is also a gap between the bolt release and body of the receiver which they say is within spec. I don't remember that large a gap with my first receiver or any other ones that I saw. It is large enough that I noticed it right away on the second receiver.

This doesn't even include poor accuracy. (Hey, maybe I can't shoot the rifle.) The first receiver did +4inches at 100yards, the second around 1 1/2.

Here is my dilema. I asked for a refund on the barreled action. They say there is a 15% charge for refunds. I'm already going to lose a lot of money on the stock now another $130 dollars for the action! I'm close to $200 on shipping costs alone since I got this rifle. IF I get the refund I would lose enough money (stock, shipping, refund charge) to have bought another rifle. And I still don't have a rifle to shoot. Do I give it one more try or not? Do I part company with Montana Rifle Company now and consider the money I loss an expensive lesson?

I'm afraid that if it were mine, I'd ditch it. You might want to look at the Remington model 700's. I've had really good luck with those.

its time to cut your losses.

i haven't heard near as many success stories w/ mrc as i have stories that mirror your own. also, they should be paying your shipping charges...

cut-n-run!

Well, I would first demand that they waive the re-stocking fee and issue a full refund, in writing - after all, isn't *everything* you experienced a direct result of defects/shoddy quality in their rifle?

Failing that (a refusal to so waive the fee), then I'd cut losses/lesson learned.

This "Montana Rifle Company" - this wouldn't be the same as the well-respected Cooper of Montana would it?

no.
mrc is an upstart company that has been plagued w/ troubles from the start - many just like mike is experiencing.

their concept is sound, their products are priced right, but, they just can't put it together.

Dakotasin, perfect description of MRC. It could be a nice product and I have read reports of people being very satisfied with the end results. I am not one of them and I won't be using their product again.
The customer service rep, the owner son, is taking the rifle out this week after their gunsmith worked on it again. If the gun doesn't shoot now he has offered to make a complete new rifle that is trued up, lapped, ect.
I thought that was supposed to have been done the first time!
If it shoots under an inch I'll keep it. I hate giving up and have to much money in it already. If it doesn't shoot I'll push for a FULL refund before I'll let them make me another rifle.
Thanks for the help guys.

rifles are expensive, and custom and semi-customs are even more so. bolt guns are also pretty simple, ergo there is no reason they couldn't get this rifle right the first time.

sure hope it works out for you.
