Today I was doing my usual browsing at one of my favorite gun shop...looking for something interesting to pop up.......next to me there is a guy talking with one of the shop salesman, evidently they did know each other well enough from the tone of the discussion....I could not help to do not overhear some of the discussion, here and there....the guy is looking at a Kimber 1911....he already own a RIA.......he says that he is "a Browning guy", he loves the last HP he bought from the shop.....at some point later I hear the salesman saying "You carry a Buck Mark"!!?? Oh yes, I love it the guy says...and sure enough he shows his hip holster with its fully sized Browning rimfire....such a breeze to shoot, I'm so deadly accurate with it, it is so ergonomic for my hand...and modern 22 defensive ammo are good enough to handle hairy situations...the salesman does not comment further....here you go, a person supposedly owning more serious hardware deciding to carry a full sized 22 as defensive weapon...what do you make of it??!!!

Not a common carry gun, but one can do worse than carrying a gun that he shoots well, that has little recoil, and that carries 10 rounds.

Maybe, in spite of his assertions to the contrary, it is all he has.

Would you want to be shot by it?

If he is comfortable carrying it, his decision.

Also I would not assume that is his normal defensive carry weapon. Maybe he was at the farm that day and had it on his hip for varmit control and kept it on for the rest of the day. If the salesman is friends with him he may have knowledge to things you do not.

I'm pretty sure he was talking with the salesman about the Browning HP he bought from him...unless he sold it.....

I'd hope you know the difference in ballistics between a 5.56mm round and a .22lr. In any event, to each his own. I don't carry .22lr but it may make some sense for certain people. In any event, I don't tend to judge people's carry choices, as I don't know their reasoning behind it.

I try not to criticize people who choose to carry responsibly. If you're going to rip on that guy, than you REALLY need to rip on people who don't carry at all, which may include close friends and/or family members.

In a sour situation I think I'd be super thrilled to find my Buckmark on my hip if I bumped it while reaching for my knife.

That being said, as much as I like my Buckmark, I'll continue to carry my 9mm, .45, and .44.

There are plenty of stories of people killing attackers with a .22 and ultimately, you need to go with what you shoot best. It doesnt matter if you have a .45 Micro Compact 1911 if it cant shoot it and hit your target.

Id rather have a .22LR on my hip than my bare hands.

To clarify, I'm not ripping anybody..I just find a bit odd that someone owning what I think are more appropriate defensive handguns, decides to carry a full size rimfire....to each his own and a 22 is better than nothing I guess....sure a 22 can kill and it has countless times...
I love my S&W 22A, very ergonomic and extremely accurate..but I would not carry it for defense...

The instructor that did my concealed carry class said his favorite carry pistol is a Walther P22.

I wouldn't carry a .22 auto simply because I don't trust the reliability of them.

I think some people just carry what they are most comfortable shooting and don't put a lot of thought into ballistics and such. There are guys who like guns and then there are "gun guys" just like there are guys that like cars and then there are "gearheads".

I fall into the latter of both of those groups. Obviously, a 1911 would seemingly be the smart choice as it offers much more power in a package that is no larger than the Buckmark, but If he feels more accurate and confident with his .22, then that was likely the deciding factor for him.

I forgot to specify that the guy seemed in his mid-late forties....I would say medium build....so I do not think it could be a caliber power controllability issue....

In all honestly and I'm serious when I say this in my experience on small animals from a handgun 22lr is more effective than 380 down centerfires.

My truck gun is a 9shot 22 revolver loaded with aguila sss.

I carry either a 44spl or a 9mm usually. But I'm not defenseless with that little DA 22 either

I would carry a Kel Tec PMR 30 if I had one. 30 rounds would likely be overkill for most defensive situations but would be very nice to know you have it without having to change mags. It is also a .22 mag and not a rimfire so... a little more punch.

A buddy of mine works search and rescue in Oklahoma and carries a .22 rimfire Mag revolver. I would not want to get in front of him. Seen him hit a full running rabbit at about 15 yards from horseback. It is what he is comfortable with and it is ultimately his choice.

I do not see where the Buckmark would be bad if that is what you can use effectively. Easy to manage recoil, very fast follow up shots and (at least for me) a very accurate platform. Would not be my first choice, but would not get down on someone else going with it.

Well, I can't really critique the guy's choice without knowing the reasoning behind it.

But I'll tell you right now that seeing someone carrying a .22lr makes me really WANT to know the reasoning behind it.

Shoot someone in the head with a .22 and they will stop.

...Do you have any idea how badly you're making me want to make a Zat Gun comment right now?

My hands are literally shaking from me trying desperately not to go there.

ONLY hits count. Only HITS count. Only hits COUNT. Any way you say it, it's the truth. For the record, I would rather be missed by a 45-70 than hit with a fastball. 10 shots from an accurate, reliable handgun vs. using my wits & fists? No contest.

Shoot someone in the head with a .22 and they will stop. :neener:
Not necessarily... only if the bullet penetrates, which is not guaranteed with any caliber, but is less likely with a 22lr.

I've seen someone shot right between the eyebrows, from spitting distance, with a 22lr who was not only not "stopped" but the bullet just tracked under the skin and exited by his ear. He was discharged from the hospital with out even a concussion before the end of my shift.
