So last night at our local weekly IDPA-style meet, we shot an El Presidente; and when I got home, I told my wife we shot an El Prez, and described it. And she said, 'What?'.

So I've been assigned to find out why the El Prez is called the El Prez. Does anyone know where it came from, and how it got its name? Thanks!

According to Jeff Cooper, a Latin American president was let down - or sold out - by his bodyguard and had to defend himself. He was attacked by three revolutionaries, obviously terribly incompetent, and shot them in something like the standard El Presidente drill.

I heard a different story:

Cooper was in Latin America (or somewhere down south) training the president's security detail. As he was getting ready to leave, the president asked him how he would know if his guards were keeping current with their skills. Cooper designed the El Prez as a test that would allow the president to see that his detail was up to snuff.

That's the story I was told too. But I have a video of me shooting it when people ask me what an El Pres is. :D
