I haven't been shopping for wheel gun target ammo in a long time so I'm wondering if it's a continuation of the great ammo shortage begun ~Jan 2009.

I'm looking for .357 and .44 WC or SWC but cannot find it. I don't like to pay to put JHPs through paper and I especially like the nice clean hole the WC's punch.

Are they really disappeared from the market or am I just looking in the wrong places? Where did they go?

Thanks for any feedback.

Buy a single stage press for $60, a few simple tools (manual, scale, caliper) and start building your own.
Missouri Bullet has all the SWCs you can stand for about a dime each, delivered to your front door.
Buy some primers at about .03 each.
Powder at $20-25/lb.
I can put together a box of 50 for between $6 and $7.
You will start out a bit higher (but not much) and you will work your way down if you buy components in bulk.

I used to roll my own but unfortunately I'm lacking the space resources required to setup a press.

I am thinking you will have to look for them but being from the area you are a stop at the LGS will prolly help ease your problem. I have wc's loaded in my .38 spec. right now. just something about 140+ grains of soft lead......

I saw tons of hornady wadcutters available on PV the other day.

edit - I misunderstood. you were looking for completed ammo, not components.

hmmm... I suspect with the mass buying of everything ammo related. the less-common produced items like wadcutters are a victim of supply and demand. makers are likely cranking out only the most popular stuff till that part of the market is saturated again.

found this.

When you learn to,

Keep your supplies ahead of your needs,
Cast YOUR OWN,
Load YOUR OWN,

These little market glitches will NEVER trouble you again.:banghead:

I also COAT my own projectiles so leading and exposed
lead is a thing of the past also.:):)

MOONMAN

most wadcutter ammo seems to be rolled out in small amounts to the point of " the company only sold 10,000 cases of it last year so well only make 10,000 cases this year"

Not much available in loaded/factory ammo. Unfortunately if we are buying ammunition we can only buy what is available so rolling our own is the best way.

If we can find powder....:banghead:

I recently purchased 1000 ea. 110 gr. lead wad cutters from a local guy to build my personal .38 loads. I developed an SD load for my Wife and her Ruger LCR using these 110 gr. wad cutters. Good stuff for practice and hot enough for SD without the recoil issues in a 13.5 oz. revolver.

If wad cutters are your game you'll need to find bullets and roll yer own or accept extremely limited availability locally and online. Wad cutters are apparently not vogue anymore.

Good question, I can remember never finding any SWC's for a 1911 I used to shoot a lot, and this was years ago. I agree with your rationale for wanting them and I'm just as baffled by their non-availability.

okay, this may be off topic a bit, but with the decline of bullseye shooting, and the proliferation of reloaders out there
- could the market for factory produced wadcutter/target ammo be depressed so far that there's no longer any cost efficient reason to produce it?

.223 and primer sizes

look at the ammunition offered for 9mm, 40 sw, and 38 special. the practice ammo mirrors the "tactical" ammo.

ie 130 grain fmj, 125 grain fmj, to match the hollowpoints of the same weight.
