Where do they get the gel bodies on Deadliest Warrior?

This show is insipid and stupid, but those bodies are pretty cool. Where do they get them?

They make em. Ballistic gelatin, anatomically correct bone replicas, condoms filled with corn syrup & red food colour.

That show is hilarious, but the doctor is a bit over-eager to pronounce things as "instant kills." He ought to know better.

as an interesting aside, i was going past the USAR firing range east of Hastings, Ne last weekend and noticed they had hundreds of 3D targets. looked like the plastic army men we used shoot our bb guns at ,except life size. i would like to have some for yard art.

Given the application in Deadliest Warrior and Mythbusters, ballistic gelatin is not a realistic general-purpose soft tissue simulant.

Nice, I like the stuff on that link, strambo! I'd like to try a range full of the full size green plastic Ivan - cheap, nifty and no natural aiming point, so it's all on the shooter.
Some of those targets are truely wild, but interesting that they come in white and "swarthy"...if I used a "swarthy" one here in the Desert Southwest, the news would have me on a pillory as a racist hatemonger...

armored, I use the photo realistic paper targets that are armed and have various aiming points for normal range work. I feel if you are training for combat (self defense, whatever) you should always be engaging an armed threat to build that into the subconscious. That is, unless just doing pure marksmanship drills focusing on trigger control etc.

I have 3 of the 3D targets (the $32 ones) that I put old shirts and pants on and then either arm them with a foam gun (or not) and engage as required. I've messed with using balloons and string to get them to fall when hit in the vitals.

I'm a firm believer in making training as realistic as possible...a full 3D reactive target would be best, can't justify the expense yet...

I bought some corn syrup and red food dye to mess with effects like on that show. Haven't gotten around to doing it yet, but the dye and corn syrup does make great blood.
