Where do you get your SD bullets (projectiles)?

After starting the carrying reloads poll thread, I am starting to rethink carrying plated and lead cast bullets. Like I said in that thread, this is all I have bought for reloading in years. I have a couple of online lead cast bullet guys I buy from and get some Berry's plated from time to time.

What do you reload for SD? Where do you buy from? How much do you usually pay? How much of it do you actually reload?

Thanks

The last SD bullets I bought was the Speer 180 grain Gold Dots for 40 S&W. They were $150 for a thousand at Surplus ammo&arms. Other than those I like Hornady XTP and noslers sporting handgun bullets. The nosler comes in a 250 count box and the price depends on caliber. Tell me what your looking for and I can help out more.

BJHP

I bought 2,000 Remington 40S&W 165 gr BJHP projectiles, basically the same as golden saber's, a few years back when they were on sale at Midway USA. I've found a good load for my Glock's (7.5 gr Power Pistol with WSP primers, OAL-1.12) and have been carrying these. I shoot the ones loaded in my magazines every month just to stay fresh with that load and to make sure the rounds don't get crusty (it's hot and humid in Houston!).

I'm down to below 500 remaining, I guess I'll be disappointed when I shop for these again.

I rarely buy online, so as to where I generally get my JHP's, is from local shops. How much I spend depends greatly upon what cartridge I'm loading, and which brand and type of JHP I choose. This ranges any where from $18 to $25 per 100 ct. box.

Most often I usually go with either Gold Dots or XTPHP's. But if those are not available I pick another JHP from the shelf, Sierra or Nosler will suffice with little concern on my side, they all seem to perform well enough for SD, and at maximum velocity.

I load for 9mm, .38 spcl, .357 mag., and .40 cal., so I will generally choose a mid weight bullet for that particular cartridge offering.

I use only 2 bullets for serious business, a 135gr Speer .357" bullet and a 158gr LSWC/HP bullet from either Speer or Hornady when building FBI replica ammo.

I usually but online because I have not seen either bullet locally.

I have a guy at work peel them off tires one at a time. By the time I load them, their pretty good looking HP's. And from the limited testing I have been able to do out at the yard, they hold up pretty good.

I know that guy, too !

Now, if I could just get an HP mould the wife liked in 452, and get it to perform, I think I'd be done.

I have some 230 grain ones I could let you try.

Out of a 3" barrel 1911 they retained 99%+ after going through a 70lb animal at point blank.

Yep, all of the jacketed bonded HP are pretty decent, especially in 9mm and up.
I recently found some XTPs for my new .380 and at Montana Gold 500ct prices, so I'm really happy with those. (They are the best, in my pretty much baseless opinion.)

But as someone mentioned, any factory PD projectiles are so scarce I haven't bothered trying to shop very hard for them.

I too like the Gold Dot's and XTP's. It seems component Gold Dots are first thing to evaporate and the last thing to come back, during a shortage.

I recently found some pulled Gold Dot component bullets on GunBroker for $160 per thousand (9mm 124)-- my son and I split them. Pictures look good, seller has great feedback, yet to arrive.

A basic search on GB ought to pull them up.

I don't use handloads for SD, but if I did I would just order hollow points from Midway. I agree with you that they would be a better choice than plated or cast. You want some expansion for SD IMO.

Those are one of the designs she was looking at, Don.

How well do they deploy on impact ?

What kind of alloy do you use to get them to do what you need them to do ?

Feel free to PM it if you don't want to sidetrack the thread !

Grubby : I just might take you up on that offer.

^ The Nosler HP bullets are certainly accurate in my .45 Colt loads. I haven't shot many of them since I started casting, but I remember liking them better than Hornady XTPs accuracy wise.

blarby,

All depends upon the alloy you use. The .45 ACP is a low pressure round, so the alloy doesn't need to be hard at all. To get mushrooming at low velocity, you need to keep antimony to very low levels or even eliminate it. I find I can get a lot of lead pipe at my local scrap yard, which is nearly pure lead. I then add solder so I end up with an alloy of 25:1. Hope that helps.
