Carry gun on me or on the nightstand, .357 on the nightstand too, the rest of the pistols in a safe in the closet, rifles loose in the closet. No kids, no kid visitors.
+1 for the nightstand. My 9mm lives there with two loaded 17 round magazines and another 100 hollowpoints. The weapon is unloaded and the slide is locked back. No kids in the house.
Blackpowder guns are on a gun rack in my den. Rifles and non-carry pistols are in a steel gun-locker, in the den. Carry guns, when not on me, are in the dresser drawer upstairs. Primary Intruder Management is the 18.5" Mossberg 500 leaning up against the wall between dresser and desk.
No kids, and no unauthorized-for-weapons types in the house unsupervised. I'm also not worried about someone messing with the Coehorn mortar in the front hall.
I need advice, as I am going to pick up my first firearm tomorrow morning.
I live in a two bedroom apartment with a friend of mine (we are both 25). Very mellow environment. We do have friends over occasionally, no kooks though. I just purchased a lock for my bedroom door to secure my room when I am not home.
Now I plan on keeping my gun in my nightstand next to a loaded magazine and I am starting to think this may not be the best setup, although i would want fast access to my firearm. I am concerned with the firearm in my nightstand mostly when I am showering and my room is open or if I hook up with some chick and go to take a leak and she finds it.
All my guns live in a 28 gun safe in my bedroom closet. The safe is bolted to the wall studs, and the floor. Ammo and goodies are stored on a Rubbermaid shelf next to the safe. At night before bed the safe is opened and a 870 with 8 rounds of 00Buck in the tube goes next to the bed. I almost always have a pistol on me at any given time.
The one thing i hate about safes is that you can never see what you own, its all hiden away. Yes it may stop bad guys but it stops you from always seeing them.
I have been thinking instead of buying a safe i might build one, with temp. glass or some strong clear stuff. Just to stop the casual thief. If an expert gets in no steel safe is safe.
To the guy asking about the night stand gun with the room mate, heres a cheap way to hide it. Go to a used book store and buy a nice thick cheap book. Then hollow it out for a gun in the middle, or make a hole in the back so it can lie over the gun. This will stop poeple from seeing it as they pass your door.
