Hey guys.
I'm thinking of dressing the Ruger Blackhawk up a little and putting some new grips on her for Christmas.

Where would you guys go to buy said grips? Looking for something in the $100-$150 range if possible. Can't break the bank.

I'm thinking faux ivory or stag.

So where should I look?

I'm in a bit of a pickle for Ruger grips. For several years, Cary Chapman was doing all my Ruger grips but he has since had some health problems and retired. Right now, I've got Jack Huntington building me a custom .500JRH and he's done two pairs of grips for it. His grip work is fantastic but I don't know if he wants to do just grips that aren't part of a custom build. He's also over your budget beginning at $300.

I've heard mixed reviews on Eagle. I have one pair that's good and had one that wasn't. I think if you send in your grip frame for fitting, you'll be okay. That said, I did just order some UltraIvory for my Schofield and a rosewood target grip for my GP-100 from them. We'll see how that turns out.

You mentioned faux ivory and stag. I can wholeheartedly recommend Sack Peterson for elk antler.

One I've been wanting to try is Outlaw Grips.

Private Schultz is well reputed but I've never used him.

Thank you Craig.

I love that stag. The Sack Peterson site has them listed for only $200. I may can stretch it out and swing that. They sure do look nice.
I believe if you go to the site and click on "Describing Appearances" tab, Example #3 is the Ruger you posted a pic of. :)

I will certainly keep him in mind. Thanks a lot.

Also, I have looked at some of Cary Chapman's stuff before. The spalted maple grips are amazing looking.
I wondered why everything on the site was marked "SOLD". It's a shame he's not doing well and is retired. He had some great looking stuff.

Cool, that is mine! I need to get that Bisley .38-40 I've been wanting and send it to him for grips.

Cary's grips were excellent, it's a shame he's no longer making them. I wanted some in merino sheep horn real bad.

I have a set of American Holly grips from Private's Custom Grips on my Ruger Flattop Blackhawk and they are excellent. First rate fit and finish, relatively quick service, and decent pricing. Great buy for the money.

Grips

While I admire custom grips...sometimes time and the prices do not fit in on my wishes...so I humbly suggest Hogue grips...for meeting your budget..and quick service..

I like those bannockburn. A lot.
He's got some spalted maple grips at a nice price too.

Quick question, did you have to send in your grip frame to have him custom fit the grips to, or does he make them according to your model and ship?
I may very well go that route.
I do love the elk horn grips, but I've got champagne tastes on a Busch Light budget. ;)

And there would be room left in the budget to look at some leather for it too. :)

Maybe one of CraigC's California Slim Jim holsters.......hmmmmmm.

ROAshooter, thanks for the suggestion.
However the time frame doesn't bother me. Custom takes time, that's just part of it. I'm a patient guy........sometimes. :)

And price wise there just isn't much difference in the offerings from Private Schultz and the Hogues. Those American Holly grips pictured above can be had for less than $100.

Does he have elk stag grips too? I've heard they're much nicer than elk antler grips.
What you're probably thinking about is Sambar stag vs. elk horn. (I'm guilty of saying "stag" when I mean elk horn, but they are very different).
Sack Peterson does not do the Sambar stag because he cannot get enough of a supply to make it worth it to him. That's coming from the website.

What makes them better (in some people's opinion) is that they are harder and less porous. They say they are more durable.
Also, I think they get a yellowed look as they age that the elk antler will not.

Craig, correct me if I gave any misinformation there.

I got sort of raked over the coals about stag, so I simply refer to them all as antler.

But elk antler and sambar antler are so close that one is hard pressed to tell the difference as far as durability is concerned.

I ordered a pair of elk antler grips from Pat Grashorn, and sent him my grip frame last week, and will get my grips Saturday. Pretty fast sewrvice.

Wow. That is crazy fast.

His website is very difficult to understand though.
The links at the top take you to pictures of grips but there are no prices and there is no ordering information.

Do you just have to contact him via email and correspond that way to order?

When I first got my Ruger Flattop it had those generic looking black plastic grips on it. First thing I did was order a set of Ruger's Rosewood grips (I think they were like around $35 at the time), just so I could have something halfway decent on the gun until I found something a bit more customized to my tastes. Came across some examples of Private's Custom Grips, liked them, and promptly ordered a pair. Didn't have to send him my grip frame and when they came I immediately put them on and they fit perfectly.

My Flattop with the Rosewood grips. Not bad for factory grips and great to have around for every day use.

Yeah, I'm working with these cheapo plastic grips here.
It's probably what came on yours.

I love this gun. I gotta make her look pretty and get her some good leather to hang out in. :)

I've been to Don's many times.

I've bought thousands of pieces of once fired brass and lots of powder and primers there but never have looked at any grips.

Funny story, I would have bought that Blackhawk there. I went in and the sticker on that model was $499. So I ask him about ordering one in .45 Colt and he makes a phone call. He says, "Sure, my supplier has 8 of them in stock. I can order it today."
So I tell him that if he can get me OTD for $500 I'll pay him in full today and he can order it. He says absolutely not, he'll have to charge me tax.

After I try and haggle a little bit and he won't budge I tell him I'll look around a little and get back with him.

I go across town to Ft. Thompsons and they have them for $459. I ask about ordering the .45 Colt and they make a phone call. Same answer as Don's. "My supplier has 8 in stock. I can order it today."
I was OTD at only $485 at Ft. Thompsons. And obviously they get their stuff from the same wholesaler. Oh well. Don's wouldn't budge. I'm a full time college student and an extra $40-$50 is important. Heck that paid for the dies.

The guys at Don's are very cool though. Love going in to get powder or primers and shooting the bull with them.

I didn't rake you or anybody else over the coals about this. I simply stated my opinion and the reasoning behind it. The problem is that there's a lot of bad blood over on 'that' forum and some folks (not you) carry grudges. Some (not you) even go so far as to respond to me in discussions that otherwise do not interest them. So in response to those folks (not you), my comments become more combative. I apologize if you took any of my comments personally. All that said, 'that' business belongs on 'that' forum, not this one.
