Where to move?

Honestly, I would find a place to live based on other attributes such as proximity to family, health care, climate, economy, quality of life, etc... then run it against the gun rights check... If it were me making the decision. But it is not :)

Don't move to Nevada, it is a barren, ugly state. There are miles and miles of open spaces without a soul to be seen. Most of Nevada has fewer then five people per square mile. You would get lonely out here.:D

SD between Rapid City & the WY border. You heard it here 1st. I've done my research.
+1 to this.

If you are looking for a job that is firearms related, this is the area. There are at least a dozen small to medium manufacturers in that area. The weather is temperate, not too hot in the summer, and (usually) not too cold in the winter.

The Black Hills are great for recreation, offering hunting and fishing enough to satisfy just about anyone.

I'm unclear of the current laws pertaining to legal open carry or concealed. Does one require a concealed licence in Montana and is it legal for open carry?

Montana is an open carry state, concealed carry with in the city with permit which is easily obtained. Outside of the city limits no permit is needed.

And we have no sales tax.

I've been living in Colorado for the past 10 years and it is an incredible place to live with a very high quality of life, excellent career opportunities, endless outdoor activities and plenty of places to shoot.

Gun laws are very friendly except in metro Denver, where 30 round mags have been outlawed for some odd reason. Concealed handgun permits are easy to acquire for law-abiding folks

Population is about 5 million, which is pretty low considering the size of the state. Our 2nd largest city is Colorado Springs with a pop. of about 400,000.

The gun community is alive and well and very active.

Wyoming would be my 2nd choice and we may buy a camp there one day.

mcdonl- I am looking at those things as well, just had to make the thread on topic for a gun forum.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm still rather stuck on which state would be best for me. I want wooded land, close to/in mountains or at least hills. If only I was closer so I could visit someplace new there each weekend!

SSSsssshhhhhhh!!!!! ;)

Great area, vacationed there several times and that is my "dream" area to retire or live.

Shooting community is very active and strong.

Hmm. I grew up in SE Alaska, and it's all wooded mountains & water. I'm not sure how much land costs, as I haven't lived there since becoming an adult. People up there tend to have very active lives in the outdoors; tons of hunting & fishing to do. The air is so pure that it feels thin at first, and it's easy to disappear from civilization whenever you want.

The issues with the area are travel (you pretty much need a boat) and weather (it's SE Alaska - very, VERY rainy & windy). Plus, you have to think about bear protection in most places.

I'd recommend taking a vacation in each of the general areas you're interested in. If the right job landed in my lap, I'd want to live around Sitka, AK. Some places in Montana are interesting as well.

New Mexico is pretty cool...even though state govt. flip flops between parties they never do anything to liberal or conservative. As for gun laws, we have 1. That one law is you need a CCW to carry concealed, other than that we have no gun control haha. Cost of living here is dirt cheap, except Santa Fe, and plenty of unregulated open space to do pretty much anything in!

As far as Alaska, if you need a job you're pretty much stuck with being in the Anchorage area. If thats the case Forget the lots of land thing it's very expensive in commuting distance of Anchorage. Land is cheap further north or south, but no jobs. It would be a weekend cabin sort of thing.
Very gun friendly to say the lest. Every one I know owns guns, no carry permit required. Lot's of gun savey people here.

No state tax, or sales tax[in Anchorage anyway]. The state gives all residents a 1000-2000$ dividend each year.
Salt water fishing, Salmon rivers all close by.
The only real down side I see [been here 16 years] is big game hunting is very difficult and expensive. You must have a good 4 wheeler or do fly in.
Small game is a different story. bird hunting and varmint shooting is fantastic.

I am thinking of the same thing. Well, I see the OP is from SC. Actually, I was considering moving to Upstate SC, particularly the Greenville area. However, I am not really sure where to go. It is my dream to one day have my own land where I can shoot, but I see that is not a feasible option for now. I have a home business and I am pretty mobile. My only requirement is broadband internet for my software biz.

Anyway, I would really miss the greenery here in ORegon, but the constant and perpetual rain drizzle is a bit depressing. I like to be in a place that has more sunshine, mountains and greenery. I thought South Carolina would be nice for that. The only thing that disturbed me about South Carolina is that it seems to lack good places to shoot. In the Portland area, you also have to drive quite far to find outdoor places to shoot that are safe. I was hoping I can have a situation where I Can live in a nice place like Montana or Wyoming, but do my winters in Florida. The more I research though the more I see it is too cost-prohibitive and impractical, perhaps.

I never thought about Rapid City, SD, wow that does look like a nice place. Never thought about the Black Hills area, but maybe I should do more research. Considering the winter in Colorado Springs has been warmer than in Greenville, maybe I should rethink Colorado as a year round destination. Doesn't seem like going South in the USA makes a place any warmer. LOL

Yup Wyoming is the place to be.. Ya see them little dots out there in that picture. That's a new housing subdivision for wannabe ranchers.

A feller froze to death out there last winter.

I agree TN is pretty gun friendly.I don't know about where you live in the state 22-rimfire but its getting had to find a decent place to shoot unless you own some land. There are only 2 ranges within 1hr of where i live and i dont believe in paying to shoot my weapon especially when ammo isnt cheap....

Idaho is a pretty good place to live.

Boise has jobs, its not crowded or packed, slow moving and never rushed. our 5'clock traffic is nothing... maybe add's 15 minutes to the ride. Homes are cheap and worth the price right now. Gun laws are very easy going and easy to get a CC. Open carrying is pretty well accepted. 30 minutes out of town you can get to a forest, river, lake, sand dune, desert, ski resort... Summers are only hot 6 weeks out of the year (maybe 95-105) but its dry heat, not humid. Winters in Boise are very mild as of late (used to be wild in the 80's). rest of the time its 75 and sunny. No polution to speak of past an inversion in the winters once and a while.

If ya take a trip here to check the place out, you wont leave. Its a place you fall in love with.

Montana my friend. High quality ammo is produced there and it's open country. Laws are laxed and people are very friendly, willing to help in time of need. When this country falls, that's my choice. Wildlife is abundant. Good luck.

Utah is very gun and family friendly. You don't need to of a certain religion here, contrary to popular belief. Its great as long you have no kids in public schools. We spend the least per pupil of all 50 states.
