Hey folks,

I am in Durango visiting family for the week and was hoping to go plinking. Does anybody know a public range or a place in the federal land where locals go to shoot?

Thanks!!

I'm in NM, south of Durango (great, fun city!) and I go onto BLM land and find a safe backstop hill, no houses around (which is almost all of the land). Be aware of the Southern Ute reservation that covers a lot of country south of Durango. I would search for a gun-related business in town and ask the locals, usually your best bet. Do stay off of the reservation for plinking, tho. You might even call the city police and ask them, or ask them for a reference to someone to help you. :)

Do you know what the National Forest regs are for shooting as in: distance form a road, or house, etc?

I would make a phone call to the Nat'l Forest District office (phone book) and ask directly, too easy to get well intentioned, but erroneous information from guys like me. Some times we don't know as much as we think we do! Explain what your problem is, and they may have other contacts for you. Most people are willing to help, once they get a clear question.
