I'm considering keeping a gun in the car and was wandering if anyone has any suggestions on where to keep it.

Thanks!

Are you keeping it in there 24/7? IMHO I would keep it somewhere accessible. However, I would take it out for the night. You can leave it in there during the day.

keeping a gun in the car doesn't really help with traffic. I would suggest mounting one on the roof. People will get out of your way much faster that way :D

I would suggest where ever is convenient and comfortable for you that is in compliance with your local law.

I will be taking it out just about every day because it will be parked outside, one other concern of mine was what I can even keep the gun in, like a holster, or a soft case or whatever.

from my experience there are a few practical places to carry a gun in the car... but that depends on if you are in the car at these times as well... if I am driving... under a coat in the passenger seat. otherwise, if I am leaving it in the car.. or dont have the coat:banghead:, then there area between the seats is a good and easily accessible place as is the pocket on the back of the passenger seat. I have used all of these places, they are within easy reach, do not require more than a moment to get into position to shoot if necessary.. between the seats, under the seats, or in that pocket also work "well" if you must leave the gun in the car for, lets say, "recreational" reasons.

or you could always mount a lock box in your trunk:D

no matter what.. LOCK YOUR DOORS!!!!

nothing wrong with keeping a gun in a holster or case as long as it is dry and clean in whatever the method of containment is...

In a locked safe bolted to the frame in your trunk ... just in case. Keep in mind that you already are carrying at least one gun on your person while driving, and you have at least one other one close by ... again, just in case.

I keep mine in a leather case in the door pouch. I can unzip it one-handed. It's a Ruger P90 .45. I keep it with one in the pipe, decocked. It's not visible from outside the car except under certain lighting conditions, and you can't tell what it is even then. Pretty much everyone would assume it was the car's manual, since those come in zipped black canvas cases.

Ford E350 van. One on me. Another laying between the front seats on the floor partially covered with a small towel.
Carjack. I want to watch you release the seat belt, lean forward, and draw. Heaven forbid you have a jacket on.

Gun in car?

Like the man said, put it in a place convenient for reach if you need it in a hurry---otherwise why have it in the car? Are you thinking of a hiding place to keep thieves from finding it? Forget that---they'll find it.

If you're a Kentucky resident carry it in your "factory installed glove box," regardles of whether you have a license or not. If you have the license, you also have the option of concealing it on your person. Kentucky frowns on hiding it between, under, or behind the seat. If I were going to make a practice of just leaving a gun in the car all the time (just in case) I would choose something kinda cheap, maybe even a HiPoint (yes, they work pretty good!)

it's tricky. sit in your car and start looking around. find somewhere that you can reach with your shooting hand that is also out of sight. dodge trucks have a secret compartment under the middle seat in the front and that's a great place, but i drive a ford truck with a center console so reaching with my shooting hand becomes tougher, since my seat is farther back than the armrest. if you have unused dash space you could make a secret compartment. also, mounting a magnet somewhere hidden is a way to go. some people just mount a holster somewhere. lockbox under the seat is too slow if you need to draw while sitting in the seat. you just gotta sit in your car and start getting creative... good luck!

When I'm driving, I wear my IWB holster, but keep the pistol in the map pocket on the back of the passenger seat. It is very easy to access, and, when I reach my destination, I pull the gun from the map pocket, holster it, and carry it with me, returning it to the map pocket when I'm back in the vehicle.

I keep my gun in two places: one my car has a compartment in the trunk area under the floor-boards thats just the right size for a shotgun (this is an SUV with an external spare) and the other place is what would have been the ash-tray. That area is just large enough to accommodate a 4" automatic just in front of the shifter. Prior to that, I just kept it in a cheap Uncle Mike's IWB holster between my legs. Easy to get to, and quite secure from any knocks or jars, short of a crash into something.

Of course, when I leave the car said gun would transfer to my hip and come with me.

The one's who frown on it, are the same ones who don't want you to have a gun:banghead:. If you have your CDW you can have it any place you chose. Kind of the whole reason to have the license is to carry Concealed, or the only place it can be is in the Factory dash compartment lockable or not. I keep mine sitting up right between the seat while driving and in the consol. I keep it on my hip when not in a vehicle.

If I'm driving, it is tucked into my waistband, cross-draw style. When I get out of the car, it goes back into the IWB holster.

I don't leave a gun in the car, because I don't want to arm some scumbag who breaks into cars.

If I felt the need to leave a pistol in the vehicle, I'd do as PlaybyPenguin does...he has some nice posts with pictures of his mounted locking box. Search him out here or or TFL.

My weapon is on my belt, or it is in a pocket of the jacket I am wearing. Or, if I am not wearing the jacket, it is in a pocket of the jacket with the butt situated where I can grip it without a problem.

on the front sid e ofmy wase band is a carry that makes me nervous.. I am sure more than one person has been.. DE-MANNED.. that way...

would prefer it to be in the passenger seat, under a jacket or something.. maybe a shoulder holster...

You need to check your state laws.In S.C. it needs to be in a glove box ,console or truck.Under the seat, and you are likely to go to jail.

Living close to the SCar. border presents a problem with us NC residents. In NC any firearm has to be visible(not concealed) but when you cross the border they have to be inside a closed compartment. As a habit, if stopped in NC I lay firearms on the dash in very open view. Did that one day in Charlotte, NC with four handguns and they nearly went beserk. Soon I had four cruisers parked around me and it took me 45 minutes for them to go through the process of checking them and then searching the auto. Finally they said "have a good day" but let us leave prior to reloading. LOL, I had maybe 5-600 rounds of various pistol ammo in the passenger compartment and about that of '39 in the trunk of the caddy. They just didn't understand why I would have so much ammo. It was only about 100 rds per, wc
