Where's all the Win 231?

Been on a suppliers wait list for several months...still waiting. Has anyone scored any?

Got hp-38 from both Gamaliel & Powder valley in the last month. Many winchester powders have been coming in stock at the local Cabelas as well, usually on Fridays..

HP-38 and W-231 are the same powder. Hodgdon has announced it and it can be seen in reloading published data (all numbers are the same, i.e. max, min, velocities, etc.). I would, if I were you, look for some of this as well or as a replacement. HP-38 is generally cheaper than W-231 even though, in modern production, they are the exact same powder.

I tend to find HP-38 more frequently than W-231 and made the switch from bottle labels. I have been finding a decent supply locally and bought enough to last me a while during my last purchase. I paid $18.95/lb in 1lb quantities (no bigger jugs available.)

LGS has it from time to time. I usually grab a pound when I see it. Up to about 5 lbs in the locker now.

HP-38 seems to be available more than W231. Pretty much the same, as others have stated. Grap some and give it a go if/when it comes available.

If you can not get the 231 get the Hodgdon HP38. The exact same powder as Hodgdon makes WW;s ball powders.

Smaller shops have it so call around - hope this helps.

During a shortage, W231 seems to be the first powder to disappear. That shows how popular it is. You can find loads for almost any handgun cartridge, from 25 ACP to 44 Mag.

Hp 38 = w 231

I found HP 38 (8lb'rs) at Natchez in March. Just check often and you will find it.

Why pay more money for the Winchester label? HP-38 is usually cheaper by a few dollars per pound. I understand if it's all you can find. But I look for Hodgdon labeled first.

Just scored an eight pound jug from Graf & Sons, don't know how much they had.

I have the opposite problem, my lgs has 296 and 231 but none of the Hodgdon powders that I use.

They get it in once in a while but I always seem to be a date late. I'll have to have them set me back a couple jugs of it, but I know it will be a while.

But they do have all the Alliant powders I use so I'm very thankful for that.

I've only found 231 at gun shows, and for retail price (thank goodness).

none of my local gun shops have any of 231 or hp-38.

Thanks guys for your responses. I've got 4 lbs "on order". It'll take me awhile to shoot through all of that. As soon as I buy some HP-38, then the order will arrive!

LGS got some about a month ago.
He got about 20-25 lbs of the stuff in. So I bought one pound and suppose to get more. Surprisingly, There is still a bunch left there.
