yeah, I know with UBB.Classic and UBB.Threads.... (now just UBB I think) you can't remove it no matter what.

With Vbulletin you can pay extra.

PHPbb you can but you lose community support.

Yabb I wasn't sure about.

*sigh* One MORE forum ..

Amen to that one :D I think I'm on XDTalk.com, Sigforum, arf.com, m1911.org, and here! To much to keep up with, let alone while going out shooting, and cleaning guns... sheesh!

It is also usually in the license agreement that you keep it in there unless you pay extra to remove it.
ktog runs yabb, a free open source forum package. I'm not familiar with the license to vbull.

ktog runs yabb, a free open source forum package.

Free software usually has a license, be it GPL or something else. YaBB uses YPL (YaBB Public License) which states in the Terms and Conditions of Use:

You leave the YaBB copyright visible on your installed forum as they were placed in the original Package. This rule does not apply if you have purchased a separate license to remove the copyright or are redistributing the Package and have followed other rules in this license to remove it.

They also have code that checks to see if you have removed it. If you have, you end up with a message like this at the bottom of your forum. Granted, one could remove the code for that, but there's still the difference of what one can do and what one should do.

I'm not familiar with the license to vbull.

Can I remove the 'Powered by vBulletin' copyright text?

No - All copyright messages (both in the software code and templates) must be retained and visible.

A 'branding free' license is available at a cost of $120 per license, in addition to the cost of the license itself.

Once you have purchased this option, you will have the right to remove all references to Jelsoft and vBulletin from the vBulletin design templates, and from the page title. Note this is for one license only and is in addition to the cost of the license.

Also please note that you must retain all copyright notices within the actual product programming code (these notices do not affect any visible vBulletin pages). Note also this does not allow you to rebrand the software with another name. It only allows you to remove the Jelsoft/vBulletin copyright information.

The vBulletin branding-free license concerns the removal of visual branding. The branding-free package available from the members' area does not remove comments or variable names within the program code that mention vBulletin.

You may change the logo without purchasing this option.

Missing Copyright Notice

The copyright notice must be clearly visible on all forum pages unless you have purchased the Branding Free license option.

Your footer must contain at least the following text and must not be masked by color or images:

Powered by vBulletin
Copyright © 2000-2007 Jelsoft Enterprises Limited.

Pretty much all of them have similar language, for example, SMF's license says:
All copyright notices within source files and as generated by the Software as output are retained, unchanged.
...
A Modification must not alter or remove any copyright notices in the Software or Package, generated or otherwise.

This has deviated significantly from the topic at hand, however. If you'd like to continue the discussion, we should either move it to the Tech Support forum or PM.
