Which .17 HMR?

I can get the Weatherby for $700.00 new, the CZ 453 Varmint new for $540.00. So I guess the $64K question is the Weatherby worth the extra $160? Though I could pop for a high end annie, my goal is to get a .17 rifle and a scope and keep things as close to $1K (+/- $100) since Christmas was not too long ago.

if you got the money the CZ and Weatherby are great, if you want to save money and have quality optics on it Savage is the one. I got a 93 and I kill big boar hogs with it regularly ( I got several pastures that landowners ask me to thin out hogs and the .17 is cheap to shoot). experts will tell you not to hunt pigs with a .17 but I prove those "experts" wrong on a regular basis.

It depends on what you want. The XXII will be a nicer rifle in every aspect, the stock quality, the metal finish, the machining, even the trigger.
However, if the $160 is a big enough problem the CZ will be fine for everything, just not nearly as nice a rifle. The biggest difference for me is the trigger. The Anschutz trigger, and this is the basic trigger, is far better than any of the aftermarkets available, Rifle Basix, Timney, none of these compare in quality to the FACTORY trigger on the Annie. To me, that in itself is worth the money. However, add in the much higher quality stock and fit and finish, that $160 is easily absorbed into the quality.

However, if you are willing to spend that much give the Ruger 77/17 a look. Very solid and the 17's that Ruger builds shoot very straight, maybe not as good as the Annie, but dang nice.

From what I have seen with base model 64 triggers I think they are fairly comparable to the 453 triggers. The 452 triggers not so much, unless really worked with, but the 453 is its own beast. The better Annie triggers are on their own but the base model isn't off from the CZ 453 trigger. Accuracy on the 64 line seems to be a little better than the CZ line, though not always and not always by much. Some of the wood CZ puts out is great and other times even their higher cost "fancy grade" stocks are fairly plain. I'm sure the fit and finish on the Weatherby will be better. If money is no issue I would go with the Weatherby of the two. That said I think the better option long term would be to spend $460 on a scope rather than $300, but that is up to you.

Another vote for the Savage 93R17. You'd better shoot one first before you throw away good money for the same performance. I mean, if you like your money.

Besides, it's a .17hmr, not a life-dependent rifle. I have issues with a $1000 rimfire unless I'm getting paid to hit x-rings.

Well if you have the money to spend, I think almost all suggested are in the same ball park accuracy, and trigger wise so that pretty much just leaves the overall looks to consider. Honestly for $160 difference I would go for the Weatherby just because you KNOW it's going to look really good. Like Benzy2 stated sometimes even the fancy grade CZ stocks still looks kind of plain, and also something no one mentioned is the trigger guard. It's not necessarily bad looking but it is just a stamped piece that I believe comes in a matte finish. Replacing the CZ trigger guard is one of the most performed mods that I see in the cz board at Rimfire Central. Not much just something else to consider.

As for a scope at that price range I don't think $160 will make a huge difference. I mean we are talking a sub 200 yard rifle so top end quality is not really a must and $460 is not going to get you into a Zeiss, Leica, or Swarovski anyway but for a little over $300 you could still get a good quality scope like a Leupold vxII, or Nikon Monarch, etc if you search around a little.

Beauty and the beast all in one.....
Come on dubble A your really starting to make me jealous with all those nice rifles that I can't afford lol. Seriously though they are very nice rifles and those pictures look great.

Not even close, but they are not they same trigger style anyway. The 64 is a 3 way adjustable single stage and the 453 is a single set trigger, and is nice. If you prefer the set trigger then the 64 will not be good enough to change your mind, same with the other way around. But if you are on the fence and don't care, I don't think the incredible accuracy adjustments and perfect crispness of the 64 can be beat.

CZ is really funny on their wood. I think they have this huge pile of blanks and whatever gets put on gets put on.

i have the savage 93R17 in regular barrel and the BTVS

great looking gun and it's very accurate. Love the accu-trigger

I looked at the Savage Classic...nice rifle...and it was full size (as compared to other rifles). Is the CZ and the Weatherby full size as well? Is there any advantage to going with the thumb hole...is it kinda universal so that it would work for just about anyone?
