Buy a used Colt. When you decide you dont want a 1911 anymore, you can sell it in about 5 minutes for what you paid

+1

This is the way I would go. You can get a NIB Series 80 NRM for $700 or a XSE for $800

Haven't heard of any problems with the Taurus PT1911?

Here, this is from yesterday:

There's a difference between a fit/finish "grungy trigger" and a gun that just flat refuses to feed, fire, or extract reliably (one or more of the three). The thread you linked to was none of the second. It might not feel like a tuned gun, but for the price, a "grungy trigger" does NOT make the gun a hunk of junk. I'd go so far as to say that it wasn't a real problem at all.

Now, the Taurus 1911 is NOT made by Imbel. It is all in-house by Taurus; they don't need Imbel's help to make a gun.

I'd still go with the Smith.

That Taurus with the grungy take-up in the trigger is mine. It isn't a big deal. A tiny bit of readjusting of the trigger bow should do it. It doesn't affect the overall reliability of the gun, and the chances of you getting one that does it is slim.
Something else to consider is warranty.
S&W or Kimber will take care of a defect at their expense. There are toll free numbers and email adresses for them that you can use. Taurus, however, will repair a defect if you pay for shipping the gun to them. I think this is a slight negative. With my PT1911 for instance, it is less expensive for me to fix it locally than it would be to pay to ship a handgun to Taurs. Also, Taurus doesn't have (that I could find) a toll free number, nor did I locate an email address for customer support. But, these things aren't really huge negatives, just something to think about.
For the money, I could have gotten something else, too. I already have a S&W1911, so I got the Taurus PT1911 just to get something a little different.

I bought my Taurus (for quite a bit less than $500, actually) because it had all the accessories I was looking for in a 1911, noting that a comperably equipped S&W (do they even offer one?) or Kimber would be over $1k as would paying a gunsmith to do the work (I could do some of it myself, though).

If you lay three equally equipped versions of those guns on the table with no more than $100 difference I'd go with the Smith. I love my Taurus and have no real problems with Kimber, though.

New Colt...

New Colt XSE: $825.00
New Colt Series 70: $759.00

Kimber? Do NOT get the external extractor! FWIW, due to horrid customer service, and horrid quality control, I say avoid Kimber.

Taurus? The Taurus does appear to be a decent deal, but I prefer to buy American.

S&W? I haven't forgotten the sell-out factor from the Clinton era. That, I guess, leaves me with the original 1911...Colt.

I only have personal experience....

with the Kimber and the S&W. I know the Kimbers require a 'break in' period, as many guns do these days. I've owned two Kimbers one broke in fine and was absolutely reliable after that. The other Kimber was sold after two trips to the factory (and it still wasn't right). I am NOT suggesting that Kimber produces an inferior product. Obviously they make fine firearms.
My S&W has been flawless from the beginning, but this is only one pistol. The way I see it is this: If you get a good 1911 pistol, you won't believe how much enjoyment you'll get out of shooting it. It's a classic design and feels 'right' in your hand.
If you get a 'problem' 1911, and I'll bet EVERY manufacturer produces one every once in a while, it will drive you absolutely nuts.

I own the S&W1911PD Commander with Crimson Trace grips. Very nice gun. Accurate, reliable. It had a tendency to throw brass at my forehead, fixed with a little filing. It is a little light for long term range sessions. I prefer a full stainless or steel gun for that. The laser grips do get blocked with the trigger finger indexed high on the frame, but they are really nice for a house gun/personal protection gun. I move my finger down to touch the top of the trigger guard.

I have a SA Loaded and an Ed Brown Exec. Target. The S&W is better than the SA, notin the same class as the ed Brown.

I have no opinion on the Taurus or Kimber, no experience.

You really can't go wrong with any of them. Being all about the same price I would get them in this order: Kimber, Smith, Taurus.

That's what I'm talkin' about!

Bold Kaharma:

That's what I'm talkin' about! Nice XSE!

WHERE!?!?!

Please someone please tell me where you people are finding these 1911's for 600 and 700 bucks. I find good deals but 850 usually finds the low for someone other than a GI JOE Sprinfield. Oh Where OH Where can those good buys be? PLEASE OH PLEASE? :cuss:

Thank you all

for the input. Seems like the Smith wins by a nose, but I guess it will be a game time decision.

Which 1911?

Get the Kimber. It's scarry acurate and sexy as hell. I own a pro carry and it's my most accurate gun.

Kimber

I have been shooting a Kimber Custom I for 8 years.
There was never any "breakin period" and never a jam.
All the votes for the Smith sent me to gunbroker to check
one out and I was impressed.:scrutiny:

I own a Taurus PT1911 and a Kimber Pro Carry II. I have no hesitation in recommending either one of them. The Kimber will hold its value better but the Taurus is an excellent gun for the money. Buy what you like, it's your money!!:)
