I am looking at getting a nice 1911. I like the stainless, skeletonized hammer, three-hole trigger configurations. I want one with no play between the slide a receiver, laser-accurate, and dead-nuts reliable. I am looking at Colt, Kimber, and Springfield. Out of these, which make and model do you prefer? Thanks.

I'm curious as well on this topic. Love the OPs use of laser accurate to describe this

Even within those three choices you need to narrow your search down to models.
Springers range from hand built customs down to bargain basement models. Colt also has a wide range. I honestly have no clue what Kimbers "Custom Shop" entails thou.

SA and Colt offer lifetime warranty vs. 1yr for Kimber; thats enough for me to place them dead last, esp with their liberal use of MIM.

I am currently contemplating a SA Custom Shop order, just not sure if I want to wait 2yrs for it.

I could never afford one, but I've hear that Les Baer is about as good as it gets. After that I would get a Springfield Range Officer. Personally, I'll be getting the Springfield GI.

Between the three manufacturers I have a personal preference for Colts as I have bought several of them (all M1911 variations), over the last few years and all of them are well built (tight slide to frame and barrel to slide fit), and more than accurate for the task at hand.

From the factory you have your choice of several models (XSE Series, Combat Elite, Special Combat Government, and Gold Cup), which offer many of the features you're looking for in an M1911. There is also Colts Custom Shop if you want further enhancements or modifications done to your pistol.

Colt.

Every other 1911 is just a clone.

Colt is putting out some of their best 1911s ever these days. My 2012-production Government XSE has ZERO play between the slide and frame, and it has been 100% reliable.

I've had a number of 1911s over the years including the 3 makes that you reference in your post. I've sold most of them and kept the ones that I liked best and shoot the most. As you can see Kimber is one of my preferences along with stainless finish.

I have all 3 brands. The one Springfield and 3 Kimbers have been great since the day I got them, the Colt needed a lot of work to make it as good as the others. I'd say SA or Kimber, then Colt.

I am waiting to see civilian version of 1911 that Colt is making for Marine Commandos. If I like what I hold in my hand it will be the first very own 1911 handgun. I can hardly wait.

I have 2 Springfield 1911's...

5" GI-45 and a 4" Champion. Both go Bang! On request every time, and put the lead where I aim.

I've owned Colt, Kimber, and Springfield. The S&W 1911 beats them all. It is often overlooked, but you really should give them a look. It's not that the others are bad guns, the Smith is just better.

Does it matter if its American made? If it does, you can rule out the Springfield.
It may be finally assembled in the U.S. but many of their 1911's are made in Brazil and Croatia and most if not all the 1911 frames come from Brazil.

I'm a new Colt owner and I couldn't be happier. More accurate than I can shoot and slide is smooth as can be. And I know where its made, each and every part.

No Springfield Armory 1911s are made in Croatia.

Some (i.e. Mil-Spec, Loaded, etc.) are completely manufactured in Brazil by Imbel. Some (i.e. Range Officer) and made in Brazil with final fitting and assembly in the U.S. Some (i.e. TRP) have the forgings made in Brazil, with final milling and finishing in the US and all finishing and many small parts of U.S. origin.

Springfield makes some great pistols, but personally, I like for my 1911s to be U.S. made. That's why my vote is for Colt.

if you want 'laser accurate', the cheapest you can go is a Les Baer 1.5".

I agree with the comment on the SW1911, I've had 2, I'm still enjoying the 2nd one a whole lot. I also like my Springfield Loaded 1911 in 9mm. Regardless of which 1911 you choose, spend the money for good magazines, I have Wilsons for both of mine, you can't go wrong!

I've had some feeding problems with my kimber ultra carry. The range officer said its prolly because I'm limp wristing, so he tried it out and jammed up on him too. Happens on the last round in the mag when it does happen. Even with good mags it happens occasionally. It likes to shoot critical defense though, so that's what I carry.
