Remington 541-T.
Extremely accurate. This is the 'sporter' weight 541-T that replaced the 541-S in the late '80s.

Easily the best .22 lr (rifle) that I will ever own (and NEVER sell).

Go with the CZ 452. They're very accurate, high quality and very reliable. Pretty durable too. Not a semi auto, but you'll really enjoy it.

Is the CZ 452 Trainer full sized or kid sized? What's a good price for one? Does it have good iron sights?

I have a Marlin Model 60, and it is an extremely accurate rifle. I can outshoot my cousins Savage MkII with ease. My only complaint is if you disassemble it fully the recoil spring is a beach to get back in. Ive bent 3 so far and I've fully took it apart 3 times. It needs to be shorter

The Trainer is full size, the Scout smaller. I have both but the Scout is not too small to be a good woodlot plinker. The Trainer have better sights and a longer barrels than the Scout, both have decent triggers, and both are a cut above the 513.

For target shooting, I think the best ive ever shot was the Marlin .17. I cant remember the name, but it it dead nuts accurate and just as good to shoot if not better than a 22 IMO.

Get a CZ. I have 3, and one Russian target rifle. I sold my other rimfires. As Jeff Cooper said, "only accurate rifles are interesting". (or was it Teddy Roosevelt???) Here is a 25yd target with my CZ Super 2500 (same as an Ultralux), iron sights, 5 shots with cheap ammo on a very cold day.

Here is a 50yd target with 10 rounds of cheap ammo on the same cold day. This is from my CZ 513, which doesn't have the adjustable trigger.

The CZ 513 Basic model can be had for $200 or less, depending on where you look. I have built a few "ultimate" 10/22's over the years, and none could compare with even the cheapest CZ in accuracy, and the trigger is better than a 10/22, or a Remington 597 out of the box.

the cz will be the most accurate in this group, plus the most beautiful. A real lifetime gun. next will be the marlin, and it may be the equal of the cz, you never know until you shoot it. but you can get those 50 to 100 dollars at most pawnshops. i would look for one made between '85 and '88, these will not only have the bolt hold open feature, but will alos still have the 17 round feed tube, the tube goes almost all the way to the end of the bbl. Ones made after '88 have 14 round tubes. I have a ruger, and they are great and fun , and all that, but they almost never are accurate or reliable out of the box. you have to spend about 50 bucks for a few mods to get it reliable a parts kit, then a 40 to 50 dollar trigger job, to help with the accuracy.

N4Z, you and I are on the same page! MARLIN 925!

I just free-floated my barrel today and graphite lubed the trigger. I don't know what they put into the trigger group at the factory*, but it certainly does a good job of disguising that excellent trigger! I've shot the thing for a year, and today it feels like a new gun. It looks like one too now that I took the sights off. Last time I grouped it at 25 yards, the group was smaller than my pinky is wide. Easily a .25" group with bulk federal ammo, I was impressed.

An honorable mention goes to the savage MKII, afriend of mine has one and while it has some reliability issues (it's being fixed by savage) it was a good shooter, and at a very low price!

(There was some gooey stuff in my trigger group, maybe it was lubricant or something, but I took it out with a Q-tip and put some fine graphite in there and I now have a light and CRISP trigger! I know some people don't like the marlin 925 trigger, and that gunk must be why)

Oh yeah, the ruger is a great fun gun and I love mine to death, but not a target shooter in the least.

I voted for the CZ.if your search around and find a BRNO mod 1 thru 5 buy it!!.they are a step ahead of the CZ rifles.

Although I voted for CZ, I can also recommend a Biathlon Basic (BB) if you can find one. They come fully floated, bedded and with one hell of a trigger from the factory. I've owned a CZ-452 and would suggest them in a heart beat if you couldn't get a BB.

These are the two that I shoot the most. First is a HK Haneal Built in about 1935 in Germany. Competition gun from that era. Second is a Yugo made Charles Daley with a 4X scope.

CZ452 no doubt. Reliable, super accurate (Not Cooper/Anschutz) but as or more accurate then ANYTHING anywhere near their price, good looking, well made and inexpensive.

So yes I am fully in the 452 camp. I have tricked out 10/22 that is a tack driver as well but the 452s get my vote.

Your poll asks about target shooting. But...

Your post askes about plinking. Sure there's a huge camp here with the CZ series. Even a few with the Marlins. -And a good following of 10-22 shooters.

So, with the Marlins you get a 60 in a repeater with tube magazine.
or a bolt with clip/mag. You have the option of getting stainless.
-Accurate for pop cans out to 100yds. But they won't print groups like the targets in this thread.

Or you get the CZ, single shot bolt that will nearly compete with some of the Anschutz for some really good money.

Or, a Ruger 10-22 that with scope will print 1 1/2" at 50yds. for less money than either of the others. If you're not completely satisfied with that, there are upgrades that don't break the bank for the Ruger that will cut that group well in half.

So, assess your needs, then fit the rifle to that need. Cheapest in order are the Marlin, Ruger then the CZ. The other Win and Remintons will cost near as much as the cheap Anschutz. For $600 CMP is offering new Kimbers, for $225, H&R model 12's. I and a friend are buying a couple of model 12's here shortly. -Just because we like tinkering. Where else are you going to find a match grade 1" 28" barrel on a .22 for that price? Adjustable trigger too. No sights, but we're going to put scopes on anyway. We both have 10-22's with some modifications. So, you see, we have plinkers, and we'll soon have something more 'target' ready.

Hello all,
My first choice is a Remington 512 next is the Marlin model 60.:D
Both are tack drivers.
But the 512 hasn't been made since 1962 :(

I voted 10/22. I've had one for 8 years (since I was 14) and have literally never had a problem with it. I never knew how to really take care of it, and so it never really received the cleaning it should have for the first 4 years or so of ownership. Even with the misstreatment it has NEVER let me down. I can shoot the cheapest garbage through it and it doesn't miss a beat. I LOVE that gun. Not to mention, they are quite inexpensive.:D

But the 512 hasn't been made since 1962

Got mine for my ninth birthday, so that would have been 1961. :D It's still as accurate as it ever was and I keep it loaded with CB shorts for local vermin when needed. Doesn't disturb the neighbors.:D It's got a couple of club bench rest wins to its credit, too, against some more snazzy, modern stuff. With Eley match, that thing is truly amazing.
