Alright,
So after I sold my Colt upper I was thinking of getting another upper (already have four AR's), but then I got to thinking, maybe I need an AK. Then I priced ammo recently and saw that 7.62x39 is no longer the bargain it used to be, that's if you can even find it and that 7.62x51 is not much more and quite available. Soooo, I go to thinking that a 308 trumps a 7.62x39 any day. So my dilemma is this. Given an $800-$900 budget, which would you get, a DSA StG 58 carbine or a JLD PTR91? and why?

I love the Hk's. However, I would go with the DSA over the PTR in this case.

I have heard nothing but good stuff about the DSA stuff. However, there has been a lot of issues with the Hk clones that I have seen floating around. I'm not sure any of them were the PTR's, but they left a bad impression upon me.

That being said. If the PTR is good stuff then do it and pick up a ton of the Hk surplus mags while they're still under $3!!!!!!!

Buy the DSA.

I've owned buth the DSA and the PTR. I regret selling the DSA. Why?

Ergonomics. Plain and simple. The PTR was built like a tank and frankly, better than any HK I've ever seen, but for my money, the DSA FAL is the platform I'd go with were I to do it again.

If those are the choices you cannot go wrong. For me the PTR edges the other mainly because you can stock up on a lifetime supply of Mags and the Rifle and probably 1000 rounds of ammo for less than $1000. I suspect the DSA will start at about $1000 or more for just the rifle, and mags are $10 and up.

With that said ....... man a FAL sure feels good in your hands, what an awesome user friendly system.

I think you oughta buy the DSA FAL for $800......I think its worth more than that right now so you really cannot lose. InterOrdnance has a pack of mags for a pretty good price look for the STG mag special.

If you really hate it once you get it maybe I will trade you for my PTR

Why do I always find my way into these threads defending the PTR-91? The PTR will require furniture replacement with real HK stuff, it's much better. PTR-91's are really building a great reputation for accuracy, FAL's are accurate enough, but not up to the PTR-91's level.

I guess I should try a FAL or HK clone.

I shoot M1As and they are just fine, fine rifles. Excellent accuracy, reliability, durability and shootability.

The PTR is a great weapon. Reliable as hell and pretty accurate. It does recoil pretty good and beat up your brass though. I am planning to work on sighting it in a bit better tomorrow. I have never fired an FAL, but I would love to test drive one of the more expensive DSA FAL's. I think it is the SA58 model, not the STG.

That being said, my M1A has better sights and is easier on the shoulder. It is also very reliable. My only concern with it is that I need to work with magazines a bit more. The aftermarket mags are not quite the same quality is the GI surplus mags and surplus mags are not cheap. I know I have one or two aftermarket mags that are not up to par with the others. Other than that, it is an exceptional rifle.

The FAL's are utterly reliable and decent, but not great ergonomics. The sights are average, the mags are very cheap and the adjustable gas system is great. The trigger really can't fixed, it's always a military trigger.
M1A's/M14's have great ergonomics and amazing sights. Mags are expensive (although they are being made again BTW) and it's a bit tweaky, but once up and running, they run great. Very easy on recoil, maybe the easiest recoiling .308 MBR out there. The trigger can be fixed and can be an amazing trigger.
the G3's/CETME have just poor ergnomics and recoil by far the most. They will beat the crap out of you.
AR-10's have really good ergonomics and are awesomely accurate. mags are a pain, and there aren't nearly the parts available that there are for the others.

Read Boston's Gun Bible for a really detailed analysis of this topic.

Me, I own a couple FAL's that are slowly being replaced by M1A's/M14's. The M1A wins it for me
