which 40 cal do you recommend
The one that fits your hand best
Pax says it best - http://www.corneredcat.com/FirstGun/tryongun.aspx

Basically any quality pistol. Hit the gun stores and handle everything they have in 40 cal. Then head to a range and rent, borrow from friends, etc, and test fire the 3 or 4 that fit your hand best. Buy the one you shoot best. Then go buy a good holster, spare mags, and lots of ammo. Shoot it a bunch and get good with it.

OP: I love the 40 but why does it have to be a 40?

Find the right gun, if it's a 40....Perfect!

For me the right gun was an S&W4013. It fits my shooting hand perfectly, but it's awkward in my left hand. It just happened to be a 40.:neener:

For me...
XD-40 Service (4") and the Taurus Millennium Pro PT-140.

For you... you'll have to find out for yourself.

Glocks are excellent, they just don't fit me personally.
SIG 229 is a great gun but outside my price range new and I couldn't find any used for sale.

I've owned or at least shot a few: USPc 40, Glock 23, 22, 27, Para P16-40, Beretta 96, Daewoo something something, Steyr and SIG 229 and I must say the 96 just seemed very well balanced & almost fun to shoot....(I'm not a fan of the 40 S&W :D )

Hey Spectre, me and you think alike.:D I have the same pair of guns, XD-40 and Mil-Pro 40, they are awesome. These are the two best platforms for the 40 cal, in my opinion.:D

.40

First of all, I hate the .40 cal. Have never liked it since the first time I shot one. My dad has the Glock 35 and I can't even hit good with it. But, for overall "Good feel" you can't go wrong with the Glock 22 or any XD .40. I almost bought the XD sub compact this afternoon just because of the conceal-abilty. My advice is to find a dealer that will let you shoot before you buy and find what fits what you want the gun for.

M&P40 , XD-40 , Steyr M40 , Glocks are all good . Its just a matter of personal preference and intended use/carry .

^^^^^^^^^^^^ What CWL said....

But since I'm here - I have a Taurus PT940 & somewhat to my surprise, I shoot it as well, or better, than my 1911s. Accurate & dependable, I'd recommend it (as I have done in some of the other 400 pages of postings...)

I like the Glock 23. Small enough for CCW, big enough to be controllable, accurate, and have 13+1 capacity. Plus it's hard to argue with the reliability.
If you like a more 1911 grip angle, I'd go with a XD. They are both good multipurpose guns. The leatherman of pistols :)

I just recently went through the same question you are asking. I went to several different websites and forums and searched to see what everyone was looking for, then i went to my local gun dealer and held, the glock, xd, usp, sig, and the s&w m&p.

For me I liked the usp the best but right now its a little out of my budget and because i'm left handed i would have to have a gunsmith switch it over to left handed.

My second choice and what i decided to purchase was the m&p .40. The weight balance and feel was perfect.

I didn't decide then to buy it, i went a local range and shot with the hk usp, the glock 23, and the m&p .40 and it felt the best to me. When i returned to the gun dealer to buy it, i realized they had a great sale, which allowed me to get a case, holster, magazine holster, and three magazines. I also got a range bag with my purchase. It was the best price around and i decided to purchase it.

Really like they all said above me, its up to what feels best to you and what you shoot best with. I found the m&p 40 to be rather accurate considering my inexperience with shooting.
