Which .45ACP for HD/Range: S&W 625 or Glock 21?

I would get the Glock 21. It has good capacity for a .45acp (12+1), is 100% reliable, will eat anything, requires low maintenance, has good easy to see stock sights, has what feels like a soft push for recoil, is easy to modify if you are inclined (night sights, extended mag release, extended slide release, channel plug, etc.), holsters are plentiful and relatively inexpensive, it is pretty light, and since it is a Glock, it will make an excellent SHTF handgun.

copper4262,

I probably could save up and either get the Sig P220 with the DAK trigger or the new single action gun, but i don't want to wait.:D

I'm a little impatient, and my .45ACP itch must be scratched soon.

Oh,

This is an easy decision!

OVERALL, AND QUITE STUNNING ACCURACY? 625, hands down

LACK OF RECOIL DUE TO BETTER HEFT? 625, hands down

LENGTH OF SIGHT RADIUS FOR GREATER ACCURACY? 625, hands down

BEST TRIGGER, BY FAR? 625, hands down

GORGEOUS WORKMANSHIP? 625, hands down

BEAUTY? 625, hands down

THE ABILITY TO SHOOT RELOADS, USE SPEND BRASS MANY TIMES, USE LEAD BULLETS FOR PRACTICE . . . AND THUS BE SHOT FOR ABOUT 85% LESS COST? ONLY the 625. Heck, if you love to shoot, and you practice and shoot a lot, and if you reload, you'll save enough to buy a G21 in no time!!! The unsupported Glock barrel is pure hell on brass . . . and you can't shoot the cheaper lead bullets in a Glock barrel.

You can always pick up a used, butt-ugly Glock with it's fat grip and lots of capacity. However, you don't need all those rounds if you've got a 625 that can part the crack on a gnat's butt at 50 yards!;)

Glocks aren't bad guns of course, and I've got a 23 . . . but it's no S&W 625. I had a 625 long before buying a Glock.

My favorite handgun of all time is a specimen of the "daddy" of the 625, a 1980-made blued 25-2 .45ACP with a 6" target barrel and wide target trigger. It's chopped to 3 1/4" yet it outshoots my 625 in accuracy.

Lots of other custom work done to it too . . . a trigger job second to none, the trigger narrowed severely and rounded for ultra-fast double action shooting in pin and tactical matches, and a single action trigger pull of about ONE POUND for startling accuracy.

I used it one day to win a special tactical match against about 35 shooters who were mainly shooting Model 17s w/33 round G18 magazines. Rules? All guns began UNLOADED. Targets? 18 steel targets spread out from 10-25 yards. Manditory reloads? Only ONE required . . . although I'd have to load, then reload TWICE MORE if I DIDN'T miss a single target.

How did I win? The speed, power and accuracy of my 25-2 allowed me to never miss, and to shoot very, very fast. Sure, I had to load and then reload TWICE MORE without missing, but the 25-2's trigger and the speed of using moon clips more than made up for the guys trying to "spray and pray" with their Glocks. The faster they ejaculated spend cartridges . . . the more they missed.

One poor soul emptied THREE 33 round clips trying to go too fast and still hadn't knocked all the plates and poppers down. That was a fun day indeed . . . and I did it on a lark, NEVER thinking I could beat all those jam-o-matic shooters with their high cap mags with a 6-shooter.

Yeah, it's getting a little worn from thousands of rounds being launched downrange . . . but I'll never sell it and, if the SHTF one day, give me my moon-clipped 25-2. There's a really comforting feeling shooting a gun that inspires such confidence and accuracy. It consistently shoots six rounds into a tiny hole, freestanding at 10 yards . . . and rolls coke cans at 75 yards consistently too! Try that with a G21.;)

I'm currently looking for a nice, pre-lock 625 in the 3" and 4" sizes. They are fine guns, and guns of beauty too!

I have a G19 and love it. But if I had a chance to get a 625 for that price and was actually considering going .45, I'd jump on it. If you decide to sell it later on, you'll get all your money back out of it, maybe then some.

Fortunately when these questions arise to me I live near a gun range that has almost any gun you care to try for rent. I can go with what feels and shoots better for me. And yes, they did have both models to rent.:D

625-3 for that $450 is a decent price, and more and more people are hanging on to the older pre-lock smiths so they are not as easy to find as just a few years ago, Glock 21's will be around for a while, I'm thinking.

If you reload, the versatility of the Smith is a gimme.

I own a G21.

Not a glock basher or anything, but the 625 is more of a shooter's gun. The glock is perfectly serviceable and will defend your life reliably, but it just ain't as much fun as a big wheelgun.

I am fending off the itch to put money down on a used smith 45acp. Hoping I can wait until this summer.:banghead:

If you've got the funds, go get one.
