RCBS or Hornady.

I bought a large quantity of reloaded ammo I believe the person who reloaded knew what he was doing However the 45 ACP I checked have to long a COL for my taste.
All the ammo is loaded with Hornady XTP bullets The "problem": is there are 4 calibers, 357 Mag, 44 Mag 45 ACP and 40 SW so that means 4 separate collets

I really do not want to be pounding over 600 rounds with my RCBS hammer!!

So any real difference between RCBS or Hornady puller dies??

Thanks

I just pulled a few .357's about an hour ago with my RCBS collet puller, worked just fine on 158 gr. XTP's and a couple 110's as well that had accidentally been crumpled during crimping.

I had one poor experience with it, but that was very likely due to a lack of experience with it, and it was the first time using it. I think the Hornady is very similar to the RCBS, I just picked the RCBS cause their stuff has always served me well for 30+ yrs..

Pistol ammo is broken down easier with a kinetic puller due to the short bullets length. Does not damage the bullets either. 600 rounds would be a workout though.

If you know what the loads are for the 45acp you may be able to just shorten the length. And not have to pull them down. Most 45 like longer OAL, feed better except in some compacts. How long are they? Any length in the 1.250-1.260" I would be happy with. I know a few that load the SWC longer.

Yes I can reseat the 45's But it all goes against the Words of Wisdom of not shooting others reloads. I can look at the powder but not be 100% of what it really is. I would rather spend $70 save the XTP bullets and not destroy a $600 gun or two.

I hear you. Your comment at start is that you knew the guy you got this all from. I will not shoot any ones reloads in my guns either. Always safe than sorry.

I had heard in the past the trying to grip the XTP is a challenge without damaging it.

I did not really know him know him;) As in the sense he was a good friend and I watched him load, based on all the top of the line equipment he sold and all his brass is new, nickel Starline he appeared to know what he was doing. The rounds may have cambered fine in his gun but not mine.

I did say "I believe the person who reloaded knew what he was doing" ;)

Regardless I have enough powder so if he really knew what he was doing he would have labeled the damn boxes!! Who doesn't do that??

I broke down a 357 mag and it is 14 grains but of what. Appears to be 2400, it's not H110 nor is it Longshot ( I picked up a big jug of that) The 45 I broke down I believe to be Red Dot but there is not definite way to tell just by looks. The have a COL of 1.256 which is to long for my guns

Besides they are all XTP bullets and to me that's a waste to send down range to punch a hole in a piece of paper.

I watched some videos on the two pullers and think I will go with RCBS, They always make good equipment and stand by there products (Hornady does too) RCBS just seems more heavy duty to me.

The first time out with my RCBS collet puller was with XTP's and I mangled a few before I got the hang of the puller. But in general, it has worked pretty well with most jacketed pistol bullets since. Just take your time until you find the sweet spot regarding how much tension to apply, and you shouldn't have the problems I had.

But since you are pulling jacketed taper crimped bullets v.s. pulling roll crimped canelured bullets, I can't see that going bad for you, they pull very easily.

What I was implying was since you are pulling jacketed bullets from AL rimless cases, it should be an easy process v.s. pulling roll crimped canelured bullets.

Yes cannelures are a pain to pull bullets from I am on medication or have not taken enough what is AL

:D

I have an RCBS collet puller. I bought an RCBS because of their great customer service years ago. I am a loyal customer forever now. Don't get me wrong, I love my Redding bushing and micrometer dies, but I have a set of RCBS standard FL dies for every caliber too (over 40). The puller is great, when I rechambered to a .257 Weatherby, I found some live rounds cheaper than new brass. I scobbed em up and pulled the bullets, easy as pie. I find the hammer puller a whole lot of work, but I has it's uses also.

Hornady collet puller, I've used RCBS and Forster. The new Hornady collet puller is much better. The lever makes it easier to use than the others.
