which is the better rifle?

Go with which ever feels better to you. Function and performance will be very similar.

The Mossberg has an adjustable trigger similar to the Savage Accutrigger. There are Axis models that come with the Accutrigger but the lowest price model you are looking at doesn't. Despite that, I would still buy the Axis. Lots of accessories like triggers and stocks are available for the Savage Axis rifles.

I have no experience with the Mossberg. Based on my experience with Savage I'd go for the Savage.

I agree with LoonWolf. Buy what feels better to you.

Good advice to go with what feels better in the hand. Don't forget to cycle the action as well. There is something to be said for market presence. Savage has that over the Mossberg.

I have a Savage; even with the basic stock trigger , it is a very accurate rifle. There is an easy trigger job video floating around on YouTube, but mine shoots so well without it, I haven't bothered. My avatar pic is the results of me sighting in.

I see the Savage has a 30 dollar rebate and is less expensive to begin with. Both are basically entry level deer rifles.
Savages have been accurate for me and from I have read and heard. I have shot an Axis .243.
I actually like the Bushnell scopes they come with. Not bad at all. I would go with the Savage at this price. The Mossberg has a better bluing on it I suppose.
If you can get to look at better images and videos on them that might help if you can't actually hold them yourself.

From what I have seen...Ruger Americans are kinda rough but decently accurate. Savage Axis is a very accurate gun with a decent trigger but crappy stock. Mossberg is similar to the Ruger only a lot sloppier. If I'm looking for a budget rifle, my money goes to a Savage. It's the decent rifle with a crappy stock, but stocks can be made more rigid easily enough, or replaced cheap enough.

that savage seem to have an awful lot of malfunctions.

what i want a budget bolt rifle for:
my range is 150 yards. i want a hi power rifle to take a shot or 2 between a hundred rounds from my marlin bolt 22lr.

the occasional deer or hog hunt i get invited to.

At my Academy the Savage is the best selling rifle we have. Haven't seen any come back for warranty work but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I did find anew Axis XP in 30-06 with a bent barrel the other day. Took it straight from the undamaged box and saw it warped hard to the left past the stock.

If you're shopping solely at Academy I would suggest a Remington 700 ADL for $379 (top it with a Prostaff in Leupold Rifleman rings) or the Savage 111 Trophy Hunter XP for $499. Yes it's more but you also get more. If budget is fixed, get what feels right.

Savage is probably more accurate, certainly has more parts and stocks, and is super ugly. Either way I'd try and get one without a scope. Those package scopes are not good.

THAT would be my vote too!
