Which Lubricant for AR-15 bolt assembly/barrel

I don't think there's a magic gun lubricant, run whatever. Personally I use some mobile 1 grease and a few drops of clp for most of my lubrication.

Does anybody use Rem Oil?

I've been using it, just because I happen to have alot of it. I spray down the bolt carrier group and the inside of the upper receiver thoroughly with it, and it seems to work fine.

CLP works fine for me. It's a decent lubricant, a reasonable (but not stellar) anti-corrosion barrier, and according to the Army dust tests it does a very credible job of keeping spooge in suspension and allowing the AR15 to keep on chuggin' longer.

Being in the military, I have a healthy supply of CLP, but in my own guns, I tend to use it in parts which will not get a lot of heat buildup. (pistol rails.) I use Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic in both of my cars, and I wouldn't mind using it in guns at all. Synthetic oil has properties that make it much less likely to attract dirt than regular oil.

mobil 1 as in? the stuff i gave my jeep an oil change with?
The same. It is an EXCELLENT lubricant, and far superior to a lot of big-name gun oils (not all of them, but a lot of them) and is IMO as good as any.

I use Mobil 1 10W30 for gun oil, and either Tetra Lube or Shooter's Choice grease where grease is needed. I had been using Hoppes Elite, but Mobil 1 seems to lubricate better and seems to last much longer before drying out.

It's OK, but it is way thinner than Mobil 1 or even Hoppe's Elite, as it's around 50% mineral spirits and only about 50% lubricating oil, IIRC. I like it for oiling a gun's exterior (goes on smoothly and looks nice), but it's thinner than I like as a lubricant.

What Chris Rhines said, although I have been using SLIP 2000 myself. It is not a petroleum based lubricant, so I can dispose of it in my sink (if need be); but it still meets the MIL-PRF-63460D spec for CLP.

Roberts said it exactly right. Use the milspec stuff and your weapon will do great. Don't use RemOil for anything. Spray stuff evaporates too quickly and a dry Ar-15 will fail to function faster that anything you can immagine.

i use remington 40x bore cleaner for the cleaning and hoppes 9 for lube. CLP dries up too quick down here where there is alot of rust and oxidation and it doesnt do a good job of removing buildup. which suprises me since its milspec stuff; but hoppes & rem 40x is the best combination ive used so far. unfortunately ive spent alot in this area

CLP for me. Use it on my pistols, rifles including AR - just about everything. I have some RemOil that my I use on my shotgun and Marlin 22.

The spec only calls for it to remove 80% of powder residue IIRC (and no copper or plastic). I use the foaming bore cleaners for cleaning.

something about using engine oil in guns...

never tried it, seems like the heavier weight oil would be too thick for smaller rifles (.22s)

30 weight engine oil will keep a M2 .50 cal running for days. at least, thats what i was told in BMT...

CLP is fine, a little too messy, Rem-Oil is ok, hell any kind of gun or machine oil works.

might want to look into the Tuf-cloth stuff, it leaves a dry film that wont attract dust or dirt. kind of expensive, but it works.

PJ1??

Is it safe to use PJ1 to take off the carbon off bolt/barrel etc. Then dry it and lube it up?

Pj1 is by far the best carbon remover I know of.

My Bushmaster M4 has been great with Mobil 1 synthetic.15W-40 I think. I'd have to double check. It's cheap, and for-the last couple years has worked great in/on all my guns that I use oil on. No rust(and several of them are just outside th bathroom door that the wife and I leave open after our daily showers, so...) and no malfunctions at all, and clean up same as with anything else I have ever used, as far as I can tell.

rem oil sucks

have to agree, the stuff seems to vanish off of/out of guns REALLY fast, including ones that just sat unfired in my cabinet. For the price, I would ave to keep re-spraying every month on guns that weren't even fired. Not worth the money, IMHO, if it's just gonna evaporate or run off, or wherever it's going.

I use LSA in pretty much everything except the AK, which gets Ballistol. I like LSA as it stays 'wet' longer than CLP. Cleaning after short trips to the range or matches usually means wiping off the old LSA and applying new.

I use Ballistol for the AK because of the corrosive ammunition I shoot thru it. I dilute the Ballistol with water for cleaning and use it straight for protecting and lube.

3 equal parts; Mobil 1 10w30, Synthetic Auto Transmission Fluid, Odorless mineral spirits. Use a little less mineral spirits if you like your oil thicker. I have DOZENS of gun specific lubes/rust preventatives and I like this concoction the best. It's pretty good a rust prevention and it makes my actions noticeably slicker than almost all the other lubes I've tried (and I've tried almost all I've ever heard of).

I run my own corrosion tests and this home brew faired far better than the average gun specific oils.

Wow, seems like alot of people are using Mobil 1, and CLP. But more leaning towards the Mobil 1.

Hoppes #9 Gun Oil for me

I've always used Hoppes #9 Gun Oil. It seems to hold up very well. It's a great lubricant that doesn't dry up when you get the gun hot from shooting a couple hundred rounds. ;)

I've used CLP and plain old 10w30 motor oil and had decent luck with both but I still swear by Hoppes. It seems to last the longest and I see a lot less wear on the guns innards than with other lubricants. :scrutiny:

Midway sells it in 16oz. bottles for around $10. That's a little pricey but not too bad in my book. Here's a link if anyone is interested.

I've been using Militec-1 for about 3 years now, for the AR bolt specifically.
Just be careful using it. We're forbidden from using the stuff(even tough we have some) because it's been reported to create toxic fumes when the weapons get hot. CLP works great anyway so it didn't bother us any.
