Which Mil. surp. rifle?

Thank you Darth for the ammo link, that is very good to know! I think I am leaning toward the K31 for the accuracy, you just have got to love a milsurp rilfe so accurate.

Wow, the Norma ammo at Cabella's for 7.5 Swiss is $44 a box. .303 Brit was available from Federal for $21 and 8mm Mauser too. I may borrow my friend's K31 and buy some of that Graf/Hornady ammo.

rbernie: Seems like you could still send it back to Hornady as they sold a product out of spec.

You can buy .303 brit, 7.62x54r. or 8x57 hunting ammo in any gander Mountain store in my area for $17 a box either Winchester or remington.

Keep in mind, the 8x57 made by US companies is massively downloaded to SAAMI specs. For factory SP hunting ammo, Norma, S&B or one of the European outfits are the better route to go for true 8x57JS.

There is a fellow at our range who has a lot of mil. surples rifles. I've been there when he's shooting his K31, he claims it's the most accurate. He did complain about ammo being hard to get.

1. Get a C&R FFL

2. Max out your credit cards by buying one of each and multiples of the ones you like best.

3. Buy Ammo! Lots of ammo!

4. Go shooting! Never mind that you are in debt up to your eyeballs, you have lots of rifles and ammo to keep your mind off of it.

Lets put this internet myth to rest. I used a neat tool called 'google' to find some sources for 7.5 swiss ammo. Its only hard to get if a person isn't willing to look beyond walmart for their ammo needs.

Actually I should stop talking about swiss rifles right now. The longer the shooting public remain ignorant about these rifles, the more time I have to accumulate them at fire sale prices before they become scarce and expensive.

Exactly. It can be had all over the place, if you're willing to order it. I think a lot of people that complain about this 'lack' of ammo are only complaining because they can't get it at their local gunshop. And some think they can only buy it by the case, but that's also wrong. You can order it in packs of 10 and packs of 60. Last I checked, AIM Surplus had the best prices.

Let's also not forget that 7.5 Swiss surplus (GP11) isn't just ordinary surplus, it's match grade. The Swiss believe in high quality when it comes to their guns and ammo, even when it's for issue to line troops. It's priced approximately the same as .30-06 hunting ammo, give or take a dollar or two. Considering it's match grade, I think that's pretty darn reasonable. You shouldn't hunt with FMJ, but Hornady and Grafs have taken care of that problem, using brass that's easily reloadable for Americans. Plus, these super accurate rifles are currently available for the cost of about five DVD's, and high quality peep sights and scope mounts are available for them.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone that thinks buying a K31 is a waste of money just doesn't know enough about them to realize what they're saying. It's actually a very cheap way to set yourself up with a highly accurate target/hunting rifle. A great way for a beginner to get started, too.

I have to make a correction to my post above. I was thinking of a different caliber when I said surplus GP11 is priced the same as .30-06. It's actually much less than that. Depending on where you shop, it's around $4 for a box of ten, $20 for a box of 60.

And people say ammo is too hard to find or too expensive? I just don't get it. My only reply to that is that these people don't know that a hunting load is available, or realize you can order surplus GP11 in both small and large amounts, and they don't realize that it's match grade. They probably think it's just run-of-the-mill junk like lots of other surplus calibers.

That's okay, though. All the more for me to buy. :D
