Which non-1911 .45?

That will depend on YOU.

The CZ-97B is nice, but takes a big hand. Its a big gun. Its like the CZ-75 only large. Great pointability.

The SIG P-220 is nice. Feels good, but limited to 8 rounds.

The H&K .45 is a bit more compact. Also feels good.

The new Ruger P-345 seems pretty nice.

EAA Makes a number of .45s, some compact.

(I've got an ASAI ONE PRO that is about as good as they get, but they're hard to find.)

The S&W 4506 (and variants) are nice, but have a high bore axis that some find offputting.

I'd prefer one with 10 round capacity.

Sig 220 is never a bad choice, after 1911's :)

On the higher end, if you like single action autos, the S&W 945 is a fine machine, though it works something like a 1911.

Neither the Glock or the Ayche und Kaye work for me.

Bersa Thunder Ultra compact 45. Haven't fired one but held it, very nice feel in the hand. Very pretty too.

I have a couple of EAA Witnesses in 10mm, both fullsize and compact. They may require some fiddling to get reliable though...probably would go for a cz97b before one of these (except they cost little more than 1/2 the cz)

I'm surprised the glocksters haven't jumped this thread yet...
Glock 21, and I think Glock 30 are other options for tupperware.

Yet another vote for the P220; in over 1300 rounds, mine has never jammed. A close second is the P97.

Sounds as if the top two contenders should be
Sig 220
CZ97

I'm definitely not a glock fan.

What's the money on a decent 220 (probably have to go used or LEO turn-in)?

I bought a LEO trade-in P220 for under $400 in the case with 3 good SIG mags and dim SIG tritium sights back in December.

CDNN may still have them around this price- I didn't buy mine from them, but I suspect it was in their hands at one time.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I like my SW99 in .45, although I am often a lone voice in these non-1911 .45 threads. It is a single stack .45 that gives you 9+1, so the grip is not fat like the double stack ones, although I have big hands, I prefer my hand to really wrap around the grip.

It had some problems with the slide locking back about 300 or so rounds into it, I sent it back to S&W, at their expense. I received it back 2 weeks later, with a new barrel. So far (about 300 more rounds) it has been flawless. Everyone that has shot it likes it...once they get used to the DA/SA trigger. Personally, my first shot, that being on DA is usually a flyer that is ~4-6" high at 10 yards. Subsequent rounds (in SA mode) are right on. Now, granted I can get the first round in the black in DA mode if I am slow, but I usually like to shoot from DA mode with a quick, real life gun raise and shoot.

Overall it is a good gun, but, I have a P220 on my short list ;)

A SIG 220 ST would be mine in a 1911-less universe.

I could also put in a kind word for the ergonomics and reliabilty of a Beretta 8045 Cougar. I am very looking forward to trying out the forthcoming Beretta PX4-45 because of my positive experiences with the Cougar.

Another CZ 97 (or any of the .45 clones of the CZ75) vote here. Had 'em, shot 'em, still got 'em along with my Paras and a Gold Cup NM.

Holy cow, I see a common thread ... the P-220 ... I heartily concur. Although I've recently for the first time ever, tried a HK USP (I'd never given 'em a thought because they always looked so clunky and ugly to me). I was pleasantly surprised; more ergonomic that it looks, quite accurate. A different feel, but a buddy claims it fits his hand the best of the big autos.
