The Armalite AR180B is a couple of hundred less than a base-model AR15 or Mini-14 (around here, anyway), and uses the commonly available AR15 mags, sights, and fire control components.

Sounds interesting, I wasn't aware of the AR180B.

For functionality I don't see how one could possibly go wrong with something based on an AK.

I had a blue Mini 14 back in the early 80s that was decently accurate and went bang every single time it was supposed to.

In the early 00s I had an SS Mini that would have had a ROUGH time hitting the side of a barn from inside! It did however go bang like it should.

Buddy 'o' mine has a couple AR and a couple AK including one he got recently that shoots .223

Gotta ask him about that!

How in the world has this thread got to page two without Krocus chiming in.

Okay i gonna help him out. Have a look at the Remington 7615. It takes AR mags, doesn't throw your brass all over hell and half of Geogia and can take 556 or 223 ammo. Think of it as an AR with a "manual transmission". (Krocus says that and said i could quote him.)

I have one and love it. It points like one of remingtons shotguns. Its very fast on target and groups under 2" with any ammo i try. And most of the time it shoots better than that.

Of the two guns listed i would and did pick the Mini-14. I have a 580 series in SS and wood. I've only shot 20 rounds through it so far but was happy to have every round in the same area. I was shooting off hand at a hundred yards and didn't have any trouble hitting a canalope sized rock.

OK, the SLR-106 had feeding issues on some very early rifles and mags, just like a lot of .223/5.56 AKs it was mostly the mags. This was fixed early and 99% don't have issues, use gen II black and clear mags. You have to remember this is/was a new design unlike the 5.45 and milled 7.62 guns. They are a huge step up from the Saigas, anyone who tells you otherwise does not have the 106 and has never priced adding all the features the 106 has to a .223 Saiga.

On the Mini, I've had one. The 106 is way ahead of the Mini too; close to the same price but with a chrome bore, easy to find hi-cap mags (that work), plus other evil features.

The 106, like the AR, is really in a different league from the Mini.

One last thing on Arsenal, they do make a quality rifle. The "issues" started with the 106F, which was blown out of proportion due to the internet forums. There were very few first hand issues; mostly it was people just repeating what they heard. The 107F has a worse rep but again it seems the issues are in the first batch of FR's and I haven't read about any recent problems and again A LOT of people repeating what they've read not what they have had first hand experience with.

Hey Krocus there you are. Now we need some pictures of the Lean, Mean, Green Machine. Also some test targets for the OP to see what these rifles can do. Thomas.

Man, those pump-action Rem 7615's are homely rifles. Very cool concept, though.

What's a street price? Rem's website is listing like $995 or something...

Dollar an hour i thought they looked sorta spiffy. I guess thats why God made so many different girls so we could have what appeals to us.

I see the 7615s at the guns shows for around $600 or so. The ones on gunbroker are allways 700 or better. They don't get bid on much either.

You also have a sight choice. I got the rifle sights on mine. I have looked at the peep set up and like mine better. Plus i have a williams peep and a scope base if i want to change.

A Daewoo K2 would be GREAT -- if you can find one.

Otherwise, I'd get a Saiga.

At the risk of questioning the precepts of your question, why are you not considering an AR?

I guess I'm under the impression that AR's are finicky about ammo, and a PITA to maintain.

The AK, Mini-14 and AR180B seem to be none of these things.

I've shot alot of 5.56 rifles and ,IMO at least, there's none better than the AR15 in 20" A2 configuration.

The above is purely an opionion. Maybe a Sig 556 if you insist on not having an AR.

i can't believe this has gone this many days and 43 post without someone suggestion the Sig 556.

maybe the ultimate refinement of the AK platform that is designed to run on the 5.56x45mm

Not so much...

But if you are worried about those issues, get a Rem. 7615. It's what I would go with if I truly didn't want an AR. Finding mags for a .223 AK turns me off from that option...

The Sig 556 is an interesting option, just way overpriced for what you are getting, IMHO, plus limited parts/ accessories...I could probably put together a gas piston AR for the price of the SIG 556...

You can buy a quality AR-15. Look at LMT...great rifles. Or Charles Daly's ARs...Use quality mags and run it wet and it will serve you well...plus, parts, mags, and ammo are all over the place. The ammo "sensitivity" that you are thinking of might be Wolff ammo, and it is definitley true that some people have problems with it (I won't run it in my AR)...but a .223 AK should run on Wolff, no problem...

there's none better than the AR15 in 20" A2 configuration.

Agree 100%, exactly why one is on the top of my list. Accurate with iron sights, durable, dependable in capable hands, and very common for parts.

Goodness. You get a brazillian different answers in a post like this. I don't know if it will be of a lot of help, but I own a Sig Arms 556, an Arsenal SLR-106FR and a Tromix-converted Saiga .223. They are all excellent rifles. I do not own a Mini-14 and I did not think the one which my friend owned and shot was that accurate (although I know they have a reputation for being reliable).

Of the ones I own, I honestly don't know which one I would prefer over the others as they are all so awesome. The Sig is a work of art, but it has virtually no spare parts available on the market. The Saiga .223 and the Arsenal SLR-106FR have functioned absolutely flawlessly for me and are reasonably accurate with Russian ammo (2-4 MOA). I strongly do NOT think Bulgarian Arsenal rifles are "just a name". They are incredible rifles in my opinion. My Arsenal SLR-95 is amazing as well. Again, I think they are all excellent rifles. Pick which one you like that will suit your purposes best and buy lots of ammo and spare parts for it.

But at this price point, you also get a really nice AKM or piston-driven rifle that doesn't need to be babied to go bang. I'm just sayin'. :)
