I'm going to go ahead and join the NRA next week, probably with the current 3 year / $70 deal, and I'm trying to figure out which magazine to get.

I'm not a hunter, so I have the choice narrowed down to American Rifleman or America's 1st Freedom. I've been able to browse Rifleman at my rifle club, but I don't think I've had the chance to peruse 1st Freedom.

Other than Rifleman is mostly about hardware and 1st Freedom is about the 2A legal issues, what are some good reasons to choose one over the other?

Thanks!

I've been an NRA member for about 15 years and have subscribed to American Rifleman since day one. I've never seen reason to change.

Like you said, 1st Freedom is almost exclusively about legal and political going's on WRT 2nd Amendment and gun laws.

AR is a good balance of legal, political and actual guns. And the guns parts is pretty diverse.

With multiple NRA members in the household we get both.

There is considerable overlap in many sections so it comes down to whether you're more interested in hardware reviews or 2nd Amendment activism.

I like the American Rifleman. More gun porn and in depth history of firearms.
I had the Hunter but it was more hunting and not enough guns.

I save all mine and use them as part of a reference library when I research a firearm. Sometimes it will have a tidbit of history that leads me look more into a specific firearm.

Of course all most all gun rags are just paid adverts.

Dan:

I was just barely a year old when you got your life membership. Probably gonna go AR to get a little of everything.

Thanks for the discussion!

I get America's first freedom...switched from American Rifleman a while back. I'm a political junkie so it helps my cravings.:D
