Which of these .357 Mags would you buy?

Security Six, GP100 or S&W will do you well.

The GP101 is a great gun but you might as well get the 4" barrel

Thanks everyone for their opinions and insight on this.

Im really thinking about the Security Six. I can always get the other Rugers later....Still that S&W was pretty nice. Im not sure exactly on how old both of these wheel guns are.

I do know for a fact that the Security Six could use a good cleaning after checking out the chambers.

Okay, So I called and asked about the 19-3. The nickel plated one I had seen had been sold. I don't know the price. I asked if they had a blued one and he gave me the price on it which was $495+ tax.

Sorry about the wrong price from earlier.

I also asked him about the Security Six and told me I can get it for $350.00 OTD!

As much as I love me some K frame S&W I'm afraid I'd have to jump on a Security Six at $350 OTD if it's a 4" & in good shape.

$495+ for the M19 is "meh." It would have to be in pretty outstanding condition to tempt me. After taxes & fees it would be around $575 OTD here in Kalifornistan.

FishSlayer,

There is no transfer fee :D But still.....I know what ya mean by that!

Okay, I went to my LGS and looked up at the Security Six again. It only had a slight mark where the finish is coming off at the rear sight and very little bit around the trigger area. Just cosmetics. Nothing to really bug me.

I told him I wanted to put $100 down.....He said no. He need's half down. He explained to me before as to why they request half down.....But still, You let a sale fall thru. Its their gun and store. Its their choice I understand that but I really didn't think he was gonna say no to a sale....Ah what ever.

I call up another LGS and he told me he don't got a Security Six but he does have a GP100 with what he thinks is a '3 bbl maybe '4. I ask him how much and he say's $300. Used of course.

Told him I would be there tomorrow to come check it out!

If that GP-100 is in decent shape it sounds like it could be a good deal, especially if it's stainless.
Too bad you can't try them out first though. I carry the SP-101 a lot and it's worked perfectly since the first round and shoots a wide variety of ammo to point of aim.
And what's the difference between half the price of the gun and the $100 you wanted to put down? If it's only $50 or so and you really like the Security Six, maybe you should try to scratch up the cash.

I would get the S&W Model 19 over the others any day of the week. I really don't think that $495 is too bad of a deal. Personally, I wouldn't want a nickel plated anything (I'm a wood and bluing guy, but will make a "stainless exception" is the gun is that good), but if that's your bag, I'm sure the nickel plating adds a little to the value of that pistol. I know S&W didn't make too many nickel plated pistols and they usually add a premium to the price. Personally, I think that $495 would be a fair price for a blued model, as long as it was in good condition.

I am a S&W fan and I am not trying to hide my bias. However, looking at the given choices, the Model 19 stands out to me as being, by far, the best on the list. Of the choices you listed, it is going to be the best functioning pistol. I think that is a fact. However, my thinking may be clouded by bias. I truly think that the only DA revolvers out there that even hold a candle to S&W are Colt Python's, Anaconda's, etc. Get what you like, but there's my two cents...

I guess I should throw out there that Ruger revolvers are inferior in just about every way to S&W. Some people may like the looks better and one could argue that they are stronger (which is only going to matter if pressures are going to be pushed to extreme levels, through careful hand-loading), but in every other aspect S&W wins out. So there you go, you know my opinion on the matter. Oh, and I like wood and bluing, which is something that S&W has always done extremely well.

Goon,

I do like the Security Six quite a bit. It is blued and all. His problem is that when people put things on layaway, They take a long time to get them out. He told me once a lady actually took a year to take out a gun she put away. So, They change their policy on it. For one, I don't think I should have to pay for someone elses mistakes.

Deacon, I went by and looked at the 19-3. He still had the blued one. I sat there and thought for a second and wondered how did he say he sold it when it was there?....What ever I thought to myself.

So, I will be going tomorrow and checking out the GP100. It is to bad I can't check em out first. Plus, I have no range near me or one Im aware of that would let me rent first....

The new Ruger GP-100 is unnecessairily chunkey.

Not sure I understand that comment. I own a GP100 6" and I'd agree they're hefty guns, only looking petite if put next to something like an X-frame.

Though being chunky isn't new. Haven't they been (except for the grips) unchanged since 1985 introduction? And anyone who wants to change the grips can get the old-style rosewood-insert kind for $23.58 at Brownells.

Alright, I went to the LGS who had the Ruger GP100 for $300. It is in decent shape, The chambers of the cylinder are much better than the Security Six I have to admit. Again, It needs a little bit of cleaning. Nothing major by the looks of it.

He did let me dry fire it. The DA pull was pretty good. The cylinder locked up nice and tight. The SA pull was great. It was stainless. :D And it has the wood insert grips in it and to what I read, These aren't being made anymore. It is the '3 BBL. Man, IS IT HEAVY!

He wanted $300 OTD. I asked him whats the best you do? He said how about $285 OTD? Taxes and all? I figured....That's a pretty good price. So, I laid down my $100 for lay away and that about covers it I guess.

I know, This thread is useless without pics. Next time....Next time.

ON another note! I did try the trigger of a 15-4 S&W and I have to say WOW! The trigger is so smooth and nice crisp break. The trigger on a S&W is much better than the Ruger, I have to admit.

This 15-4 tho, Was extremely dirty. I mean....It looked like the fella who owned it never cleaned it. EVER. To bad, It did feel good with that trigger.

Anyways....Im happy with what I think is a good deal. Thoughts?

A good stainless GP-100 for $285 OTD sounds like a damn good deal to me.

Okay, So I went to the LGS today and picked up my brand new used Ruger GP100! :D

I have a few pics, here before I cleaned it to give everyone an idea of how the condition it was when I bought it before some cleaning.

That's pretty nice. How far wrong can ya go for $300 OTD? I don't think I coulda passed it up.

I don't know what it is with people putting filthy guns on consignment. If I ever have to sell any of mine those things will be squeaky clean. ;)

Looks like it mighta been a cop gun?

Fishslayer, I have no idea. Buy I got it for $285 OTD. Taxes and all. :D Im rather happy the way it came out after cleaning it. Little bit of scrubbing and some Hoppes #9 and she's good to go. The barrel was not dirty at all. Ran one patch thru and it wasn't very dirty. Ran a second one and all I got was a wet rag.

The grips are impossible to take off....I want to take it apart and do some real detail cleaning.

As for the dirty gun thing on consignment...Idk....But Im happy he sold it in the first place!

Good looking GP100! Great price. Reminds me that I need to get a full-size .357 at some point...

I did find a 3' SP101.....With a price tag of $500. Maybe I should call some places and see.....This is a start of beautiful relationship. :D

Well, I managed to get the grips off. I had no idea I had to remove the wood inserts from the grip itself...I guess that's why the word insert should have clicked sooner. Took em off both sides and removed the pin going thru after and they slip right off. Not to dirty there either. There is some red paint there tho......What does that mean?....

m3m,

Thats my opinion also. I've got a SGS getting an SP 101 3" for me right now, said it could be in this Sat.. Just got back from Vegas, the machines were "very kind" this trip, won more than I expected, so, adding a new one to the herd. Can't wait!

My favorite of all my 357mags is the S&W 686, I have been using it for about 15 years now and it has performed beyond my expectations, It has had a trigger job and it now runs extremely smmoth and easy

Well, the red paint is shown AFTER you take the grips off. It looks more like a marking or something to let you know that it would be reconditioned. You know?

I know it isn't Loc-Tite for sure. I just found out that in order to get the grips off, You have to take the wood inserts off after removing the screw and then removing the pin that is in between all of this. Then the grip slides right off.

Click on the box below for image. I am new to the pic thing.

I have an SP 101 coming and plan on picking up this style Simply Rugged holster to go with it.

I don't think $525 was a bad deal with all the extras.

SP-101 prices seem to vary by locality. I sold one last year for $350 plus shipping and had trouble selling it at that. Once you factor in the $30 or so for shipping and the cost that someone else will have to pay to have the transfer completed on their end - $25 to even $50 for some of the crazier FFL's - a used SP-101 for $400 plus shipping on transfers doesn't look so hot compared to a new one at $500.

FWIW, I have Simply Rugged holsters for a couple of my revolvers and really like them. They're well made and carry well.
