Which .357 Revolver Is The Best Ruger Ever Made?

It might just be the Blackhawk that sits comfortably in my safe between range visits. :) It has been both accurate and reliable from day one, and day one in this case goes back more than a decade. Thing of it is, it sits more often than it gets out these days, given the state of ammo availability in my neck of the woods.

If you're carrying a Blackhawk at all, why wouldn't it be a .41 Magnum? In .357, I'm going with the Speed Six or Security Six.

I have: 2 3/4 9mm Speed Six stainless,6" no warning Security six,6 1/2" Old model Flat top,4 5/8" convertible Liberty model Stainless. and the winner is -
50th anniversary Flat top!
Better trigger (believe it or not and I made it PERFECT with an Old Trapper spring upgrade!),free spin pawl, better made sights and more accurate AND the finish is better too! I don't know if they all are this good however.

What the GP100 would still have over a .357 Redhawk is separate trigger return and hammer springs.

Anyway, I think the people who are into overbuilt things are passing on the GP100 in favor of the New Model Blackhawk.

I like the GP100 6' because I have one but honestly one time I went the range with a friend who had a speed six 4' that had probably not been cleaned in years, the sights were the fixed type and the trigger was heavy as all get out.

I clean my gun on a regular basis, I Have a millet front sight, adjustable rear sight, wolff springs and gun has been to a gunsmith for a workover,( which seemed to basically be the addition of a trigger over stop screw from what I can tell ) it also has hogue grips

Don't ask me why, but I shot that speed six a lot better than my GP, if I ever find a speed six, I intend to buy if I can.

I like Ruger, but they to tend to overbuild some of their guns.

I never considered that a bad thing. And, the SP101 is a stronger gun than the 6s while being lighter and smaller and easier to carry.

I didn't like my Security Six much. It had a lot of muzzle climb on firing that my SP101, a smaller, lighter gun didn't have. That's probably because with the hogue on it, it rode high in the hand. The grip it came with was worthless if you have male sized hands. The GP100/SP101 have the best grip frame design on the planet for a DA revolver IMHO. It does not restrict grip shape like traditional grips do, so the Hogue on the SP101 was wonderful, perfect feel to the hand, got my middle finger out from behind the trigger guard, and it had a round butt profile that was easy to conceal without bulges. Nah, you can keep your sixes. I'll take the SP101 for carry. Add to that my 2" SP101 was more accurate than my 4" Security Six, it's a no brainer.

I've got examples of most of rugers 357s. The one I don't like to shoot with magnums?

The speed six. That wide portion at the top of the grip frame where it almost curves back hits the web of my hand like a ball peen hammer.

Dan Wesson pistols originated the idea that Ruger copied...just giving credit.

also the interchangable front sight blades and the forward cylinder latch. their biggest innovation was their interchangable barrels

I have a SS Security Six with a 4" barrel that I have had since 1984. I have not shot many other revolvers, nor looked to replace this one.

For me, this IT.

The barrel nut is supposed to make the Dan Wesson really accurate. A versatile gun with a long and a short barrel and maybe a 4" for hiking. I was just never caught by the DW bug. I've owned Ruger, Taurus, Smith and Wesson, and Rossi. I do like that Ruger...okay, DW....grip frame design a lot, especially on the SP101 as the Hogue is simply wonderful on that gun for IWB carry and for shooting. Some would prefer the wood, I had the rubber and preferred it. Hogue offers the grips in different woods, though.

The Hogue I had on that Security Six was a hard nylon material. It was a little hard on the palm of the hand until I smoothed it out with some sand paper. First time I fired it after putting that grip on it, it cut my hand where it overlapped the grip frame. NOT cool, had two slices with blood running down the palm of my shooting hand. Yeah, I don't miss that gun. ROFL!

I really like the Security Six in 357. I've owned different Ruger's, Smith's, Taurus's and others. This is what I kept. Not saying better than the others...just the best for me. I took a couple of pictures. The large grips came with the gun new. The smaller grips fit my hand better and the ones I leave on it. This security six was a safe queen for many, many years until I bought it about 3-4 years ago.
