Which of these .357 Mags would you buy?

ON another note! I did try the trigger of a 15-4 S&W and I have to say WOW! The trigger is so smooth and nice crisp break. The trigger on a S&W is much better than the Ruger, I have to admit.
The reason why the trigger is so good on the 15-4 is because its the 38 special version of the model 19-3 you looked at. Without a doubt the S&W K frame series to me have the finest double action trigger I have ever handled. Thats why I have six of them.
You made a great buy on your GP100. I have a GP100 4 inch and its the best double action revolver I have for shooting 357 magnums. It beats my S&W 686. I think you will enjoy your GP100 and you can always find a Security Six at a great price.
Good luck,
Howard

Oh I do enjoy it very much. It has taken light reloads and some factory loads without so much a problem.

The DA trigger pull is somewhat heavy and am looking into getting that fixed. Might leave it like that tho....The single action is great in my experience. Best gun I ever bought for that price anyways!

I been looking for a SP 101 3 inch, and they all are too high. Found a Police
Security Six stainless 3 inch barrel just like new today from a friend for 350.00
This a 357. I think I got a good buy.

Ruger SP 101

RugerSP101357MAG2.jpg

I’ve been on the Wagon about buying any new firearms since January of this year. Today I made a classic error.... I stopped by my local Gun shop and they got me. Sitting in the case was a brand new Ruger SP101 Revolver. 2 ¼ in barrel, stainless steel, and in .357 MAG caliber.

The weight feels great and the action is real smooth. I’m going to start out with some 38 Special 148 gr TCJ ammunition, a box of Magtech 158 gr .357 MAG and for concealed carry some Hornady Critical Defense .357 125 gr FTX rounds.

Of course I had to get a holster. So I bought a Galco SPD118 paddle holster, OWB. A couple of speed loaders and then a range trip.

That looks like a good holster Slowhand! How is it?
I don't think you would be sorry about that SP101 one bit.

Kwhi,

For $350, I don't see how you went wrong one bit. All I got for the $285 was the GP-100 and a box that didn't even belong to it with some paper work...Again not belonging to the GP-100. Lol.

The holster is great. I watched a movie last night and got her all smoothed out. It rides nicely at 4 O'Clock and has a great cant to hold the weapon right where it's needed. $484.99 for the weapon and $51.53 for the holster. With ammunition and taxes $641.47. Not bad considering what Ruger lists her for.

Ruger SP101 snub. First time I shot it I was nervous cause everybody said its loud and lightning was going to come down and when I shot it I loved it better than my Glock 30 maybe because of its weight?
Either way I've loved it eversince and shooting 38special out of it is a charm.
Highly reccomend it.

If the gun was going to be used for CC, I'd definitely pick the SP101. Easy to conceal (although a bit heavy), accurate and built like a tank. If used equally for range work and CC, I think I'd look into a 3" SP101. Very versatile gun.

Mroletta,

How on earth do you hold onto that thing when shooting .357? :D
The grips look small in comparison to the others SP101 grips. I know there different grips but the grip has to be a tad harder to hold onto or is it the picture creating the illusion?

Beautiful none the less!

Re

I'm not sure, I'll let you know after I try shooting them with the new grips :D.

I haven't gone to the range since switching them out, but I'm hoping to go in the upcoming week or so. The grips are very comfortable and I don't feel like I'll lose my grip, but it's definitely something I want to try before I have the need.

For SD I have 38 spl. loaded.

I have a Galco Speedpaddle. There is nothing wrong with it as far as a paddle goes. It works pretty good, but still doesn't hold the gun as close to me as I like...I discovered the American Pride Leathers pancake on eBay a while back. It does a far better job of holding the gun close and is much more comfortable than the Galco SP....I've also go Badger boot grips. I have no trouble holding onto the gun even with full throttle magnums.

You guys are making me jealous! Beautiful grips, Good holsters and such!
I need to get some things done :D

Well I finally got around today to take a couple of pictures of my new to me
Security Six. Barrel is 2.75 this was made in 1984. I ordered a set of rubber
grips for it and I have a old Tyler T grip adapter to use also. Never owned
a 357 before, so it's just something to play with. It is real slick. good action
and a very good trigger. No marks on it. looks just like new to me. Even got
a couple of boxes of ammo at Cabelas yesterday. The 125 gr. Buffalo Bore
heavy load and the Buffalo Bore 180 grs. heavy load. Going to pick up a box
of the 158 gr. heavy load tommorrow. Then get some play time in. Ought to
be fun. Does this look OK to you all. Thanks. Phil

Heck, another vote for the S&W model 19. Those are very sweet guns, so that is what I would get if the mechanics are good (finishes can be redone).

Kwhi,

No. Not good. Horrible in fact. That ammo is just as bad. Send it to me. I can take that eye sore off your hands!

Truth be told, That is a beauty right there. Clean to! Don't forget to tell us how she shoots.

Used Security Six Blued $325.00+ tax = $370
New SP101 Stainless $475.00 + tax = $508
New GP 100 Stainless $475.00 + tax = $508
New S&W 19-3 .38 350-425? I dont remember...

Josh,

I guess it depends on what you really want to do with the gun. CCW or a range shooter. For the range I would take the GP 100 with the 4in barrel. For CCW the SP101 gets my vote. I like the S&W but, then again its a 38 special and with the other two choices you can have both .357 and .38 out of the same gun.

One thing to note before buying a .357 Magnum, look at the ballistic tables for short barrels. A snubby .357 is really in 9mm territory with a lot of blast and recoil to go along with it. You need a 4in or best a 6in to get the real power out of this caliber.

I miss my Speed Six terribly. It was a blued 4 inch. The original owner had a trigger job done and it was SWEET!!
I have a 4" GP100 and love it, too. Just not as much as the Speed 6.
The first thing I did after shooting some hot 158 gr loads through the Speed Six was install some Pachmayr Grippers. Fantastic grips for shooting a lot.
I carried it with the factory wood grips and installed the Grippers for range time.

Phil, I like your Police Service Six.

I wish I knew who did the trigger job on my Speed. It was fan-friggin-tastic.
My GP100 has about as good a trigger as my Redhawk. Definitely good enough DA for carry, and a sweet SA.
My GP is a 2004 model, according to Ruger's website.
You can look up the year of manufacture of yours there.

I wonder why your GP has import marks from CAI. My guess would be that it was exported to a foreign country for police use, and then traded in and imported back to the USA. Interesting history, if that's the case.
I'm relatively, 100% positive that GP100 wasn't made by Century Arms.
You didn't get hurt on that deal, IMO.

I have NEVER liked the look of the grip on the GP100/SP101/Super Redhawk, BUT it feels great.

Pazz,

Not sure if you read as to where I had already about a Ruger GP-100 chambered in .357 Mag with a 3' BBL. :evil" I love it. Carry or range. It works for me.

Jaymo,

I looked up that mark. I was very curious and found out that it was what you mentioned. I think I had asked somewhere before, Don't recall to well that when it has that mark, It is made by Century Arms. Im not 100% positive on this.

But, I also know that it has been mentioned that the markings are again as to what you said, Imported for use and then sent back here. I can only wonder the history behind it. She was dirty but not as bad as you think. Best gun I have bought so far,.....

Sorry about that Josh, I skipped a few pages :D

I do not see how that model 19-3 could be "new", especially at that price. S&W doesn't list the model 19 on their website. So if you can get a actual/factual brand new one at that price it would be steal.
