Vote.

Vote according to what you currently possess ammunition for. The original question is: What is the most widespread centerfire rifle cartridge? Not absolute volume/quantity, but the most commonly found.

I'll arbitrarily say that the minimum number of rounds to qualify is 20 completely cartridges that are in a ready-to-fire condition.

7.62x39. I'll bet theres more of that in US shooters inventory than even .223/5.56. Concider how much has been inported over the last 20 years, the availability of SKS/AKs and the dirt cheap prices in the past. I have 3, 5.56 rifles and 7, 7.62x39.

I see a lot of comments about milsurps and AKs and Mosins but please don't forget that the 30-06 milsurps have been around for even longer. There are a lot of 30-06 battle rifles in houses around the USA.

With that said I think .223 will overtake the 30-06 eventually.

All

I have all of the cartridges mentioned so far. Plenty of them.

I own .223 Rem bolt-action rifle, but not any kind of semi-auto. I would own a 30-06 bolt-action rifle had I not stumbled upon a great 7mm Rem Mag. I have yet to see a need for both (but I still want a 30-06).

5.56/223 only for me.

Someone said that 7.62x39 is more widely in use but I highly doubt that considering our own military uses 5.56/223 almost exclusively. You would have to take that into account.

7.62x54r/rifles have been around longer than 3006 rifles. Mosin Nagant rifles went into service in 1891 and 3006 came about in,....................................... 1906.....chris3

A very accurate Weatherby .223 in Bolt Action, 2 TC Contenders one a rifle, one a 14" Pistol, 2 AR-15s one with a 20" bull barrel again very accurate, One Mini-14 that I just installed an Accu-strut but because of the wind I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet. Oh yeh, then a Weatherby 30-06 that again is very accurate, does a Remington 700 BDL Custom Deluxe .270 count, afterall it is just a necked down 30-06? :D

Both like most of us, but members of this forum are not a good sample to represent all CF rifle owners, imo.

Most gun owners aren't enthusiasts, and of the enthusiasts many won't bother with on-line gun forums. I'd guess most ordinary rifle owners don't have too much use for .223/5.56mm.

Those few left (us) are the ones most likely to own 5.56

Net result is that 5.56/223 ownership is over represented by forum members compared to the overall rifle owning public, I'd bet heavily so imo.

I know a lot of folks who own one or maybe 2 rifles and a half box of shells for each. Had those same boxes for years. They aren't .223s.

Still, I was surprised to see Phil on Duck Dynasty blasting beavers with an AR last year, so who knows.

.30-06 only. Its for my 1903 springfield and my M1 Garand.

I don't have an AR...so I gave the 5.56 ammo to my son. It was just sitting there.

Mark

ps: don't get me wrong. I'd like to have an AR and will probably buy one by years end. maybe.

^^^ This.

I'd be very surprised if .30-06 topped .223 here with this members poll, and almost as surprised if .223 topped .30-06 in actual ownership in the U.S. That said, I have three .223s and three 30 calibers, but no .30-06.

I own one .223 and one 30.06. I own two 7.62 x 39 SKS's. I did own an AK-47 too. I don't really have a need for more than one 30.06 although I've been thinking about getting a better one. The one I have is good but there are better examples. My .223 is probably the best rifle I own. It's not a black rifle. It's a bolt action, varmint shooter. For a battle carbine I go with the SKS. And that's why I have two of them. A backup is always good idea when you're betting the farm on a rifle. I got into the SKS 21 years ago and I've just never seen a good reason to change now. It would cost quite a bit to stock up on ammo to the point I'm at now too. Oh I forgot about the boat sinking. I'm not sure how much 7.62 x 39 I have now. A boat is a bad place to store ammo.

How, pray tell, have milsurps chambered in 30/06 been around longer than the Mosin Nagant?

ETA: 556 and 30/06 here.

My intuition is based on the observation that gun ownership is growing, while the number of those who hunt is stagnant, or declining. And especially with the recent threat of an AWB, the ownership of .223 has undoubtedly surged. So if .223 has not yet surpassed .30-06 in the US as a whole, it will eventually, and sooner rather than later.

No doubt the membership here is not exactly like the makeup of firearm owners generally, but I'm not sure that makes much difference to this question. There are probably just as many .223 owners who don't get involved in a forum like this as there are 30-06 owners. As the poll numbers show, a majority of the members, being enthusiasts, own both. So "enthusiasm" tells us little about those who own only one or the other.

Just '06 for me. Don't own a .223/5.56 but I plan on getting an AR sooner than later.

Someone said that 7.62x39 is more widely in use but I highly doubt that considering our own military uses 5.56/223 almost exclusively.

Worldwide maybe. Definitely not here.

I don't own a .30-06 but do have a 5.56x45, 308 and 7.62x39.

Hands down I have the most ammo for the 7.62x39mm because of the three it's the only one I can still find commercial ammo for under 50cents per round.
