Which powder is the most clean burning?

I recently saw someone shoot winchester super clean ammo, and they smoked
very little and the shells were EXTREMELY CLEAN (like new!!).
I'm wondering if there are any very "clean burning" powder commonly used for
reloading. (I only load .45ACP).

Vihtavuori. N320 or N340 would be a good choice for .45acp. Be prepared to pony up.

Winchester Super Target (WST).

I have shot it with lead and plated bullets in 45acp. VERY VERY clean with plated bullets. Lead bullets are dirtier for obvious reasons.

All of the above will leave your brass cleaner than, say, Unique.
None will be as clean as factory loads because you are not loading in virgin brass with a lot of neck tension and primers seated way down in crisp primer pockets. All that matters.

Me? I clean my gun and tumble my brass. As long as it doesn't build up enough junk to cause malfunctions in a day's shooting, I don't care. (I did have some 9mm with below maximum loads of HS6 that WOULD coke up the chamber enough to cause FTRTB before the end of an IDPA match.)

I've found Power Pistol to be very clean in 32acp and 357mag (no smoke, no soot). I don't own or reload for 45ACP, but Alliant has some reloading data for PP in 45ACP.

Jim, That is interesting.
I use WST, and it is relatively clean, but I was just really surprised by
the super clean ammo.

Cast lead bullets??

Trailboss, nothing else even comes close, leading and smoke are nonexistant.
And yes I have tried N310, N320, Solo1000, titegroup, Clays, Universal, and Winchester 231.
IMR Trailboss beats them all and has excellent accuracy.

5.2 grains with a 200 LSWC in .45 acp.

Lots of powders burn clean when you get them up to the operating pressures they were designed for. When you load down, &/or use a lighter bullet, then you see the signs with more soot on the cases and unburned powder particles.

It is real confusing now since Winchester Powders and IMI have been acquired by Hodgdon Co, and Hodgdon Imports Aussie ATI brands (all excellent powders)

Hodgdon Universal, is an ATI powder.(an excellent medium fast clean burning powder down there with Alliant Power Pistol)

I'm glad they didnt get into the W/W 296 mess where soem batches were fast and some were slow

But mainly, I worry about Hodgdon shrinking the inventory and lumping labels together
