which rifle would you buy? Which should I buy?
My needs are strictly survival preparedness.

I have the chance at 4 rifles:

Henry repeating rifle .17 HMR
Springfield M1A
US Carbine .30 M1
Mossberg 500 bullpup

Which should I go for and what's a good price?

The M1A is the best gun you have on the list, and if you look around you can get a Polytech M14/M1A for under 1k. If not, the mossberg shotgun will be the next best thing

For survival preparedness I would skip on all 4 choices listed and buy a Ruger 10/22 and a good stock of ammo. Add a parts kit and extra mags and you are good to go for under $400.00. If you are really serious about it add a suppressor so you can hunt without letting everyone in the surrounding counties know where you are.

True survival:

1. 22LR Rifle
2. Subsonic 22LR ammo
3. 38spl/357 magnum revolver
4. 38spl FULL wadcutters and 357mag Soft Points
4. Crossbow

SHTF Society:

1. AR15/AK47/M1-Carbine/similar
2. Minimum 10ea 30 round mags and 10 20 round
3. I prefer Soft Point bullets, but Hollow Point is fine. FMJ in bulk for practice and backup
4. 9mm semi-auto pistol.
5. 3-4 12to15 round magazines
6. quality HP ammo
7. Remington 870 pump 12 gauge or similar
8. Appropriate 00-Buck ammo. (Some additional birdshot)

Survival

Mano e nature

.22 LR, Marlin M60 or Ruger 10/22, Ruger MK III 22/45 (target or Hunter), crossbow - to eat
Pistol - Colt .45 down to a .22Mag pistol - to not be eaten

Mano e mano

30 Cal. Mini 30, any AR or SKS, 9MM or .45 ACP pistol, - Urban Defense
12 Ga. 870, any shotgun w/ slugs - front door-defense

5.56 MM in any AR or M4 platform, cross bow - Urban offense
Same auto pistols for urban defense or a .40Cal.

Stick with what you could scrounge ammo for or cache', you can never have too many/much ammo.

If I had to choose one on your OP list, I'd opt for the M1A. A very good price in CA would be $1400

Seems to me that the choice varies with the scenario. In town/city is not likely the same as quasi-rural. Out in farm/ranch country can be different from either.

Further, there is always the issue of defense vs. food, and what works best for one isn't necessarily all that good for the other.
