ok guys,

i'm going to buy one of these models and i promise i will post pics and the price paid.

i may not buy one of the ones specifically listed below but it will def. be one of these models. if you think i'm excluding a good one, pls. tell me why and add it to the mix.

also please give "fair value" if you have an opinion on price.

only absolute qualifiers are .357 mag and 4" barrel. (maybe 5").

1.. Model 28-2 .357 Mag. satin blue finish, adj. sights, pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, oversize Goncalo Alves. Serial # N515xxx. 99 percent. Fired little. Comes with box, papers.

2. M19-4 ser#66K6xxx 4", pinned and recessed, adj. rear sight.

3. M19-5 ser# AJF4xxx 4" target trigger, hammer, grips

4.M586 (no dash) 4" hogue grips, adjustable rear sight

*5.* Model 27-2 .357 5” - blue, 3 screw, Target hammer, trigger, & target grips. Pinned & recessed! 98% showing minor muzzle wear from holster & faint cylinder line. N4794XX 1978-79 vintage No box and manuals.

this guy wants $750 for this but the pics look great. it just sounds so damn nice. worth it?

thanks fellas,

mike

You can't go wrong with the 19. Go for the P/R one. I have vowed to get as many model 19's as I can afford in the future. I presently have a 66 no dash, which is the most accurate and easy to handle snub I own.

Hey Mike My Friend-

All of those are good firearms; as there is not a bad one in the bunch~!:uhoh: I'm kind'a partial to the N-frames for targets, so
the S&W model 28 or 27 would be the order of the day for me.
Whether or not the model 27 would be worth $750 is hard too
say without seeing it in person. Three screws, with a 5" tube
definitely would demand a slight premium I would think.

BTW, I just bought a factory nickel 2.5" S&W model 19-5 w/o
red ramp front sight and white outline rear; and in really nice
condition (90% NRA) for $150 OTD. No box or docs, and with
a slight drag line on the cylinder; + the previous owner carved
his (or her?) initials in one side of the grips ever so slightly.

I say go for the 586 no dash. I have one in 6" and would love a 4"er to go with it. If the hogues are rubber, may need to invest in some wood grips though.

Like Ala Dan, I'm partial to N frames. :D

The 19's are a great feeling gun, darn near perfect balance. However, there's a controversy as to how well the forcing cone holds up to magnum loads. I've never had a problem, but others have. If you stick to .38's it's a moot point.

If the 27 had the box, paper and tools, I'd be tempted to go for it. $750 is a little pricey for just the gun. However, it is a three screw and 5" barrel............

If the price is decent, I'd go with the 28. An all around excellent gun, if you don't plan to CCW it (they're a bit large and heavy). I've got a 6" that marginally outshoots my 6" Python. Both are quite accurate.

I've never owned a 586 so won't comment on that one.

All the guns you listed seem to continue to go up in price. However, prices vary by what part of the country you're in. Bear in mine though on good condition blued S&W's like these, there's a saying that you "can't pay too much, you just bought them a bit soon". ;)

:what:

You'd feel less guilty if you passed that one on to me wouldn't you ??

Mike ,

All good stuff and you realy can't go wrong with any of them assuming the prices are fair. I think the M27 is high but then I haven't been paying that close of attention lately.

Personaly the L-frame M586 appeals to me being less than the big N-frame guns and yet a little beefy'r than the K-frame .

The right choice somewhat depends on how your going to use it as well. A K-frame is much easier to carry than the N-frame for example . If most use is banging at paper than that M27 has an advantage . Anyway - all good guns.

:what: Wow, Ala Dan, Congrats on that grab!!!

As mnrivrat mentioned, All good stuff. I have a 4" 19 and a 4" 28 and would not easily part with either. Have not yet obtained my own 586, but have a couple 686's, in both the 6 shot and the 7 shot plus model, they are cherished as well...need a blued one to go with em! I'd also say go for the p&r if you choose one of the 19's, but just my thoughts...

Sorry, I am not much help:
 ALL of em!!!

(If you obtain one of these, you'll more than likely get an inkling to go after one of the other ones too! ;) )

I would probably get the 28 as the 27 is priced high and I have misgivings about the long term durability of K frame magnums if you plan of doing a lot of shooting with 357magnum loads. A lot of my decision would be based on price though.

I have a 19 4" and a 28 6"

They both are wonderful guns.. It depends on your intended use..

Carry a lot and shoot some Hot loads.. 19
Shoot heavy but not much packin'.. 27 or 28 27 is beautiful but it is up to you if it is worth the price difference.

I doubt you would ever shoot either one loose, but the K's are a little more delicate.

I suspect my great grand kids will still be shootin' my 28 some day.

All good revolvers and I have owned most of what you are looking at. The 5" S&W might be worth the price if you have the finances. I have had one for over 30 years in its presentation box and alot of people have tried to buy it. From what I know of them it is the highest demanded 27 right know.

Here's my opinion of the prices:

1. 28-2: $350-$400 if it's in 99% condition. I would recommend this as the first choice. N frame 357s will only go up in value in the future.

2. 19-4: $275-$300 depending on condition. There are a lot of 19s out there so you have a lot to choose from.

3. 19-5: $225-$275 depending on condition. Less desirable than a 19-4.

4. 586: $250-$325 depending on condition. Check to see if it had the mod done due to the factory recall on the no dashes.

5. 27-2: This gun is overpriced by at least $200. I would pass at $750 without the box and accessories. I just paid $400 for one with the same 5 inch barrel in 95% conditon last month but that was a super deal you won't find too often.
