Which scope for the new rifle?

I used to hunt with my neighbor. I have an old push feed Winchester model 70 chambered for .30-06 in a birch stock. He had a synthetic stocked newer CRF model 70 in 7mm Mag. I've shot his rifle. It was a touch more than my .30-06 but it wasn't horrible. Of course recoil is subjective. Everyone experiences it somewhat differently.

Edited to Add: I used to know a guy that got scope eye every time he killed a deer. He would get excited & crawl up on the scope. You knew when he had gotten one just by looking at him.

Of the two scopes you listed I would go with the HMR 2.5-15 × 50. You mentioned that you seldom turn down the scope below 6.5. Will you turn the scope up more than 15?

I hunt woods to open area with my 7mm Rem Mag topped with a 3.5-10 × 40 VX3. I have considered updating/upgrading the current Leopold with something that has more top end, but don't want more than 4 magnification on the bottom end.
Usually....... probably not, last sheep i shot with my 280 was on 20, but that was mostly because i forgot it was turned all the way up.

Much as I like Meopta’s that’s way too much illumination for me on a hunting rifle and I don’t do any target shooting. So I’d go Athlon.

I have no problem with Meopta on hard recoiling rifles. I own more Leupold scopes(3) than anything else with second most being Meopta(2). Since Leupold has discontinued all three models I have I’ll be buying Meopta in the future unless things change at Leupold.

I certainly don't have the eye relief figures on all the world's scopes readily to hand, so it is something I check on when I am shopping. There are other fine scopes out there. I have become aware that there is a such thing as MARKETING eye relief. Marketing eye relief tends to be longer than ACTUAL eye relief. I think I got that from John Barsness probably. Cheap scopes can be a little skimpy on eye relief.

Another thing to consider is that eye relief is from the back of the rear lens. If the metal of the scope extends behind the lens very much, the smack-you-in -the-face eye relief is less.

I push 300 Win Mag. through my rifle till the barrel cries and I’ve yet to eat scope. I say this because Loon and I seem close to twins in the size department and because I know he shoots some real boomers compared to 7mm.

I haven't eaten a scope either because I choose wisely. I have been awakened from my slumber a couple of times though.

Everybody is different when it comes to recoil tolerance. I am 6'1" 205 lbs. No fat pad over my shoulders and I am old with arthritis on both. You may not realize yet, but recoil effects are cumulative. Talk to a competitive trap shooter about that. Also, talk to the guys that suffered retinal damage. I know one personally.

My personal rule of thumb is to use the lightest recoiling rifle for the task I need it for. I don't have to prove my manhood anymore. Been there, done that.

Yeah Leupy does really well on eye box and weight. I use them for specific application fairly often.

If they would quit shortening up their tubes, that would be nice. That is a trend I don't care for.

What I have in use right now are some Leupolds, a couple of Leupold built Redfields, a Bushnell Elite Tactical, a Weaver Grand Slam, and a Sightron S1. I got some cheaper crap stored away including a Cabelas Pineridge that, at one time, tried to bite me on a 243. My god, that eye relief is short!

I have 3 or 4 leupys in use, and i agree, the short tubes are annoying....well at least on long actions.

I do like the shorter scopes on short acrions.

The Meopta has a long tube which will work well on the S20

The only Cabela's scopes I've really liked are the meopta built Insticts, and some of the japan made Alaskan Guides.

100% on the tube length, even on mausers the short tubes are a pain. got just 2 working now but looking for another leupold when I update my pre64 70. If leupold could get there turrets a little better and up the glass they would be on top again, at least for the U.S. Market

I used to have a rule with bushnells, none on anything more then a 243. They are clear scopes and work fine but dam the last few generations of Bushnell really have no eye relief.

It's getting to where you need to install Picatinny rail on everything.

My Elite Tactical is fine, but it's an expensive scope and it's on an AR anyway. Used to have a Banner many moons ago, but never on anything that kicked.

I would mount the 2.5-15x. The covered turrets being and added advantage.

Save the 6.5-20x and put in a long range or varmit rifle.

I put a 4-16x on my .260. The 6.5-20x is on the .223 sniper rifle.

Or, like was said earlier; mount one, to shoot, mount the other, go shoot. Decide which 1 you prefer. All parts of the fun.

Wow, another guy with a 260. That makes two of us.

6’2” and 225 without much padding either. I started at 8 with a single-shot 20ga and I’ll be 49 in a month. I do have a shoulder in need of an MRI but it’s most likely the result of job related duties lifting things that weigh as much as I do. I’m pretty good at mitigating recoil where I can so I’m not much worse for wear because of shooting.

6'2 and plenty of padding.......im 320ish right now.... aaaany way, played with both scopes a bit more today. Hopefully picking up the rifle sometime before then new year, guess we'll see where we are after that.

I'm leaning towards starting with the HMR and seeing how if it works for me

320ish is your age? What's your favorite type of sword?
