For looks and collection purposes, I like the Russians, as the color of the stock is nice looking, and kinda different than most wood, and for collectabilty, a Russian sks is the "true, original" sks, so is a good representative example of the gun. For practicality (I.E.-If I were a soidier going in to battle, and my choice of weapon was an sks, an sks, or an sks...) I'd choose an sks-m or -d, for the higher capacity and ease or reloading (I can swap mags WAY faster than I can load with stripper clips, personally, and with a 30 rd mag, I only have to reload 1/3 as often to start with), specifically, I'd probly pick my Norinco sks-m, as the mags dont wobble, its dead nutz reliable, fast, and the stock is surprisingly comfortable and ergonomic (which I would have guessed the exact OPPOSITE the first time I saw it and went to pick it up.VERY pleasantly surprised. She's an ungly mother though....:D)

Luckily, I have both of these types in my collection now, so I'm happy.

This was my Chinese when I bought it.

Liked the original stock that I got with it and decided to refinish. Only thing left to replace is the receiver cover. Still looking for one.

This is how it shoots.

I like the Russian SKS's but my favorite is my present Chinese "para". Threaded barrel, four digit serial, no arsenal markings, early marked sights, and shoots into 2 inches at 100 yards. :)

I have two Russians that are very nice and shoot extremely well. I put rubber butt pads on both to extend the length of pull, now they are very comfortable rifles to shoot and pretty accurate for the breed.

The short stock is the only problem I have. My SKS's aren't the most comfortable to shoot due to the shorter stock. It's hilarious watching me and my 6'2" brother shoot any of the Warsaw Pact rifles. :p

Unfortunately I'm a traditionalist and I haven't bubbaed any of my guns, and I probably won't. So, a slip-on butt-pad should fix this? Will the pad damage the wood in any way? Do you just accept being called a pansy for buffering the 7.62x39mm recoil?

My 59/66 is still around after I sold my WASR, because I can hit things with it, those strippers stay loaded for longer, and it looks a heckuva lot cooler--i like the looks of that Grenade launcher and integrated pig-roaster.

I like my SKS 59/66. I think it looks mean as hell with the grenade launcher and bayonet. Imagine some punk breaking into your house with his little 9mm Glock, then you stick this sucker in his face and watch him crap his pants!!!

My only SKS is my Yugo so I had to vote for 59/66. Besides the night sights and grenade launcher scare the norms:evil:

I would prefer an AK over the SKS. I had a Chinese and Russian SKS. Trigger pulls were always a proble, The guns didn't seem worth the price of a trigger job.

So as of 7-March-2008, it's down to three makes:

1.) Chinese: 50 (Count of 46 plus 4 in "you missed one" which go to Para and "D or M")
2.) Soviet: 45
3.) Yugo 59/66: 42

To be honest I didn't think the Yugo would be in the final three. Also I thought the Soviet would be number one.

OK, Acheron brought it up so I've got to ask: How do you shoot a golf ball like a grenade with a Yugo? It seems like you could bulge the barrel due to blocking...

I was able to get an unissued Yugo 59/66 and added a plastic ATI bipod and TechSight to it. It's now my favorite 200 yard gun.

I have to get a sight adjuster for my SKS. Are there any bipods that do not require me taking off the bayonet? I like the bayonet for aesthetics and functionality. If I am ever in a position where I defend my life with all ten rounds, I would not mind having a nice blade attached to a heavy stick to finish the job.

The Chicom is lighter and slimmer to handle. Great for blasting at the range. The Russian I use it to hunt hogs. More authentic look. My Yugos and ALbies all in cosmolene so they stay for now.

I have a Russian (54 Tula) and a Yugo – both are very accurate and I like both equally, which I guess is a compliment to the Yugo. Both are stock and they’ll stay that way. And both also HATE Wolf MC ammo but work fine with everything else.

I notice the Ulyanovsk ammo in green-white boxes are very accurate in all my AKs and SKSs. I dont know if they are still available esp in today's ammo crisis. Maybe the Barnaul is just as good.

I have a Yugo 59/66 and I really like it. Its surprisingly accurate and just a plain o'le blast to shoot.:D This is the best $150 I have ever spent, its been 100% reliable after 1000 rds.

Here's a pic:

At one time they sold (or maybe still sell) adapters that you could fire tennis balls and golf balls, just like how they fire a grenade. Its simply a matter of adjusting the gas block and firing a blank.

Yugo s are hard to beat on the accuracy level. The heavy type and nonchromed barrel they put in are tops . Cant get any better.
