Howdy all!

Long time lurker - first time poster. Well, not that long of a "long time" - a couple of months tho. Anyway, the following was a 'non-event' that took place this evening. I'll warn ya'll ahead of time, it's not very exciting...

"If they only knew"

While at diner out with some close friends...

A couple of gentlemen (not in any type of uniform) came in and sat at a table close to us. They were carrying Glocks in OWB holsters. They also had a badge of some sort on their belts next to their sidearms.

(Names have been changed... blah blah blah...) In a normal conversational tone, Bob says, "Guns." Jane says, "what??" Bob, "They've got guns. They've also got badges - they must be police." Jane's father, also present, comments that in some states people can carry concealed. I mention that here (IN), just about anyone can carry, just need to get a license. He says, "as long as it's carried open?" I respond that, no, concealed is OK as long as one has a license. Somebody also commented that it's not common to see people carrying guns like that, other than uniformed police.

Ok, as I forwarned, not that exciting of a conversation. However, if they only new that under my not-that-loose-anymore of a knit shirt was a cocked & locked .45...

I would have tried to engage them in a discussion of firearm issues, but they get bored and dismissive whenever I try. And while they are among my closest and dearest friends, they do not know I carry. They would not understand.

At a previous dinner out, I showed Bob my new folding knife (it uses a replaceable razor blade like those found in box/utility knives). He said, almost reflexively, "that's a weapon". I responded that, no, it is just a tool. A cool tool." If I had thought of it soon enough, I would have held out my empty hand and said, "No, THIS is a weapon". Then, holding out my other empty hand, I would say, "And so is this. The knife, it's just a tool." But I didn't think of the response until driving home. Oh well, next time...

Anyway, they are not anti-of-the-heart types (like Rosi). They are more of an anti-out-of-ignorance, and a little bit of arrogance, type. They know I often go shooting, and that I love firearms, but they think it is just a little hobby.

For instance, Jane once said "I just don't understand what guns are good for.". My reply was "wait until someone tries to rape you, or tries to hurt Bob jr (he's 2 & 1/2)". However, I think it just rolled out the other ear. I realize that my reply was a bit curt - it just kinda came out. I am usually much more collected, such as when I invite them to the range every now and then. They always decline, in a kind of "uh, no thanks", kinda way, but I will continue to politely extend the invitation. Some day, maybe...

I think that as Bob jr gets older, and as the stress of caring for a young one wears off (Bob jr was born way premature) they might slowly open up to logic and reason. But for now, I'm simply going to "Speak softly, and carry a big (concealed) stick.".

Was there a point to this post? Oh, possibly the “Speak softly†quote. But mostly I just wanted to share. :)

Carry on!

Welcome, David!

I am new here too. Up until I started reading the Blog of another member here, I was an anti. He knows it too. Keep carrying(legally of course), and maybe(tho we all carry in hopes that we never have to use it!) you will just happen to be there when your friends need help.

Anyway, Welcome.

And thanks George for showing me the light!!!!

Yeah .... welcome David! :).

Your post sorta fits in with my recent post about what I call Agnostics - which you may have seen anyways.

There are I think many people who are not raging (raving!!?? :p ) anti's .. and are suitable for ''showing the light'' ..... but also yeah ... ''softly, softly!

Welcome David. Yiu will find that this is a very friendly place.

I too have a few friends that are antis, probably more out of not having any experience around guns. I think they might be uncomfortable if they knew I carried. But they won't find out until a situation arises that they will be thankful I am carring.

Welcome Aboard Davidâ„¢

By just being their friend and hanging around together, sooner or later they will learn that you carry and that not all people who CCW are nutzoids.

In the mean time, new guy buys the ammo! :neener:

Thanks for all the greetings.

I like the "Agnostics" description - I think that fits well to many folk.

In the mean time, new guy buys the ammo!
