Why does it seem like everybody counts exactly how many rounds they put through their guns? Is there anybody that DOESN'T count rounds?

I sure as hell don't keep up w/ how many boxes I shoot... but if anyone does happen to ask, I just look at my receipts for how many boxes I bought - how many I have left... I only have one gun in each caliber, so it kinda makes it easy... does anyone else NOT COUNT like me?

I don't count exactly, but I like to have a rough estimate.

I think it goes along the lines of when you want to replace something, like a spring, extractor, etc., at a certain round count.

Depends on what I'm shooting. If it's a 1911, I keep track because the various springs are only rated for so many rounds through the gun. For anything else, I keep a rough estimate just out of pure curiosity.

I have no clue how many rounds some of my guns have seen.

Others, I haven't shot much at all, like my Glock 38. That one has less than 50.

My Colt 1911 .45 acp ? 1000's and 1000's....

I didn't count rounds when I first got into shooting, but now I do. I use it, like a previous poster mentioned, to know when to replace springs and other high wear parts. I also find it interesting to see how many rounds certain firearms can fire before parts break, or before there are signs of serious wear. Not all firearms are built equally in this regard, with some guns showing significant wear before others with equal amounts of ammunition through them.

I totally misunderstood the premise of the OP before I clicked on this- I was thinking- Who doesn't count off as they fire to know how many shots you have left?

Since we're actually talking about how many shots a gun has used in its life- heck, I don't bother anymore. Some of my guns were bought used and I have no idea how many they had before. Plus, for 20 years of guns and 20 years of shooting- how do you expect to remember all of them?

Guns don't have odometers like cars. Maintain it well, it will outlast most of us here.

Never bothered with lifetime counts, but I do count rounds during a session. Current record is 500 through my G34 in one hour. I wonder if it was dark enough I could have seen a glow from the barrel.

I only count rounds through my varmint rifle and only because I wan't to know how long the barrel on a les baer .204 will last. Every thing else I just shoot and don't worry about.

Dirtpile, how hot was the slide on that thing? two hundred rounds in an hour out of my G35 and I couldn't touch the slide with out gloves. but it was fun.

I have no idea and I don't really care. Too many guns, too many cartridges, and way too much shooting to keep track of it all.
I only keep count when I am function testing a new carry gun.

I just keep up with what I have bought that can give me a close estimate once I subtract what I have left. I don't have any guns that are the same caliber, other than some .22's.

I don't do it, although I have a rough count on my two sniper rifles, since I call the shot and record the score on each shot and any sight corrections.

I've NEVER done it for handguns or my AR.

I have a lot of older Ruger Sixes. Yeah, why bother with the wheelguns.

I really have no clue on any of mine. I have an idea with my 1911 but that is only if the previous owner told the truth.

I count rounds for all my pistols, not for my rifles. My thinking is that I shoot relatively so few rounds through the long guns that it really doesn't matter.

I don't count rounds, but I buy primers by the thousand. I know approximately how many rounds of shot of what kinds.

I don't count rounds but I could give a ballpark estimate for mine. Mainly because going out shooting isn't something I can do every day so each trip to a shooting area/range is memorable, and I usually shoot in standard amounts (100rds .223, 50rds semi-auto pistols, 20 rds centerfire rifle, 10 rounds ML, whatever).

Once I pasted the 2000 mark, I stopped counting. I do try to keep count when I switch a part out or something for a couple hundred rounds tho.

Earlier this year when I had trouble getting the ammo I needed for tactical gun class I would ration my practice rounds so as to have enough for class. Started hitting the shops/stores in earnest and going as far away as 60 miles to The big town around here. Don't have to do that now. I haven't been in a shop that has more ammo than me in weeks. :)

I do save my old boxes and the little round holders cause I'm gonna do my own some day, so I could tell someone how many I've shot if anyone would ask. Can't imagine anyone asking.

Well, except my wife _
