Who has completed their Gun Collection? - No more guns to buy

I came up with a gun "rule" when I was about 11 years old. The 12-6-3 rule. 12 handguns, 6 rifles, 3 shotguns that stay in the collection. When I get there I might consider myself "done"

I know that many people will say, "Aaaa, there's always something you'll want or need" but I am really a purpose driven gun owner, every gun I buy gets used and it has to have a purpose to be purchased. I used to shoot and hunt with my dad a lot but after being in the Marines really fell out of shooting guns for fun like I used to. I don't mind popping off a few rounds but just shooting for the sake of shooting isn't fun for me and I've never been a collector of anything.

I really only enjoy shooting at my house because it's convenient, I hate having to drive to gun ranges and waiting on firing lines, so being able to shoot at my house is nice. Nowadays I only shoot when I'm sighting in for hunting or hunting. If it's warm enough to shoot then I'd rather be fishing.

I do have 2 very young children so when they get older perhaps I will get back into shooting.

When I say my guns are purpose driven it means everything I own (except 2 guns) are all solely bought for a purpose and to be used. I have a bolt action rifle, bolt action shotgun, and muzzle loader (3 other muzzleloaders that no longer work but probably only need a good cleaning) for deer hunting. I have a semi-auto shotgun for bird hunting, I have an two AR15s for self-defense/varmint hunting, a .22 single action pistol for plinking/varmints, and two 9mm semi-auto's for concealed carry and home defense. The 2 guns that are not purpose driven were gifts from my father, an 8" factory Magna ported blued Colt Python and a 6.5 with a Fajen stock. Those don't get used, everything else does.

I just completed my collection yesterday with the purchase of a S&W 629 pre-lock .44 mag Mountain Gun for deer hunting and backup against bears when bow hunting. I also own no wood stocked guns besides the Fajen. I've always preferred the look of Stainless and composite stocks and for me form follows function, they just have a much better chance of not rusting or putting a dent in the stock when dropped.

I have no need or desire for any other guns.

Has anyone else completed their Gun Collection?

I do expect to have to purchase some guns more as my kids get older and I gladly will do that as I hope they take up hunting, shooting, fishing, and the outdoors.
Nope. There are several firearms that pique my interest...Im trying to scrimp and save for a .22 mag S&W 48 6” as we speak. This is a recent want, but a strong one for sure .

I just saw the SA “Tanker” M1A that looks really cool... and I still would love a .327 DA 5” GP 100.... or maybe a converted Dan Wesson in .327...and maybe a nice Weatherby or Browning OU for trap...and...well, you get the picture.

Stay safe.

I take it you're not there yet? Does that mean you're only 12?:neener::D:rofl:

That would be against the law don't ya know? lol. I know it seems like a silly notion to follow a rule I made over 20 years ago. I would already be at those numbers if I never sold any firearms. The self imposed rule helps me to keep what I really want and get rid of what I don't like or need.

I’m through collecting. For the last three four years I have been giving my guns to family members. I’m down to three S&W model 10, one model 15, 870 express, Sig P238, Ruger 10/22. I will probably give these away in the next year or so. I’m going to keep Sig P938, CZ P-01, Glock 19 and 30. I have a old 1942 single shot shotgun that I will also be keeping. Being retired I plan to spend more time on the range.

I just purchased the last one on my list. Not saying that I'll never make another purchase as my needs may change some time in the future, but at this point, I'm feeling done. In fact, even have a couple that I will probably part with soon.

That said, I'm a bit of a sucker for great deals on second-hand guns that I can enjoy for a while then flip. They don't count as part of the "collection." ;)

I can't say there aren't a few more that I wouldn't like to have, M60, Thumper & Stoner 63 are all on my list ... but they're out of my price range and at 62 I don't think the military would take me.

The last few years I've been concentrating on quality and filling holes, but mostly buying "interesting" AR lowers ... most recently one that has a Unicorn, one with a profile of Trump, a couple that were made in Kansas (my home state) and last week a PSA "Property of US Government M4A1 Carbine"
and another that says "Property of US Government M16 A2"

... none of which have been built, but I'm thinking the Trump MAGA maybe in 450 Bushmaster and "Property of US Government" ones are good candiates for Binary Triggers ... maybe the Unicorn for my granddaughter ...

But for now I've been building a 1963 ragtop Baja bug ... to get around places I dont want to take my truck.

I had all the guns I'll ever need early last year.

Then the bug bit me, I sold a few ones I didn't use, and bought 3 guns in a month or so, plenty of gun accessories late last year and a new AR upper last week.

Never say never.

I posted that I was done and only needed spares. I was wrong. Got a pocket gun as back up because I didn’t have any BUGs.

I say this every year and then watch the SHOT Show videos on youtube. I always find at least one more gun to buy.

I will have all I need later today when I pick up my new to me pistol.

Tomorrow is another day and who knows what I'll need then.
My wife and I have both had all the guns we "need" for a long time now. But like you say, "Tomorrow is another day..." There's a gun show in Idaho Falls (about 80 miles) tomorrow, and weather permitting, we're going. If we do get to go, we will be taking along a gun or two we thought we needed when we bought them, but tomorrow they will be for trading in or selling in case we find some other guns we "think" we need.:D

Hhmm? An interesting thought. At this time, I don't believe there is another gun I want, with 1 possible exception. The problem is that "exception" is an ammo-waster.
I have a .22 bolt, a 10/22, and a revolver (22LR/22 Mag), a .22 Mag bolt, a .22 Mag semi-auto pistol (and here's where the exception comes in), a revolver and levergun in .357 Mag, 2 - 12 gauges, an AK, a. 243 bolt, a .25, .32, .380, a .32-20 revolver, and a "retired" .38 (not a "Special"). The .25, .32, .32-20, and the .38 were all inherited.
As for the "exception". The .22 Mag pistol is a Keltec PMR-30 so the possible exception would be the matching CMR-30 as they use the same magazines.
Otherwise, I'm done.

Funny I should run across this thread. Just this week I've come to the conclusion that I'm having an existential crisis: for the first time in my life, there are no guns that I feel compelled, by either perceived need or want, to acquire. Not that my gathering of 25 or so guns is anything particularly special, most being fairly utilitarian weapons, many of which have been tweaked to a little better than factory. No polymer (save for a G19), and other than inherited samples, no real duplicates in any category. I don't have a 1911, but I think I should own one. Just don't have the want and can't see what it would do that the G19 can't. Don't own an AR either and probably should, but have no interest. My Scotch/German heritage and rural Vermont upbringing have always made it difficult for me to part with hard earned cash without at least a self-justified "need". So acquiring more 'just because' probably isn't in the cards. So where to go from here? I'm at a bit of a loss. Hey, come to think of it, I could use a single shot 20 ga for rabbit hunting... an old hammer gun with a top lever...they're cheap...I could leave it in the truck...

I will just leave it at "no, I have not reached that point". In fact, it gives me cold sweats, to even think that there can't be another gun. Now excuse me, I must go get a drink and sit down, as I'm shaking little, and feeling faint.

I'm gonna say my collection isn't complete (there always seems to be something out there that I want to buy; right now I'm pining for something lever-action in .45-70 for some odd reason) but I've realized that I have a ridiculous amount of firearms and am contemplating downsizing. Having spent two whole weeks going through my father-in-law's stuff after he passed (truly a monumental hassle) made me realize I don't want my children to have to work so hard when I go …
