A prior thread about what to carry for self defense in NYC got me thinking.
I am "without a gun" in what most of you all would consider a high crime place.....NYC.
I've lived here my entire life and raised a family yet nobody in my family has been a victim of a violent crime (not including the attacks of 9/11).
Yea,I wish the gun laws in the city were not unconstitutional and opressive and I wish I could legally carry in my home city,I also consider my self to be fortunate not to have "needed" a firearm to defend myself so far.
I am well aware that the time may come when I really do need a firearm to get me out of an ugly situation but the bottom line is that I don't sweat it that much.
I am active in all things possible to preserve and protect gun rights city, state and nationwide....but the bottom line is I live here for better or for worse and I'm not willing to go to jail and leave my family to fend for themselves just for the "chance" that I might need a gun to protect myself.
I know alot of you think that sounds crazy and if I'm killed I will not be able to take care of my family anyway but these are the risks I must take for now.
Anyway...back to my question......how many of you are really uncomfortable or nervous when you go out unarmed?....and does where do you live have something to do with your decision to be armed or unarmed?

It only takes 1 botched mugging or carjacking to make the rest of your life VERY short.

I live in rural Idaho. The odds of me needing a gun at home are small. Iworkwiththe chronically mentally ill in some of the poorest and meth riden neighborhoodsin Idaho Falls. I feel that carrying there is prudent.

I'm from NYC and return there often. Even though I have CCW where I live, I don't feel less secure when not carrying in The Big Apple. I guess I just approach firearms like I approach tools in general. Just because a certain tool is impractical (or, in this case, BANNED) doesn't mean there aren't other tools I can rely on.

Yes, we can't carry in NYC. But, for me anyway, that means I just have to rely on other means that I carry all the time back home, anyway.

I'm not nervous when not carrying, though it takes a couple of hours to realize that the weight is gone.

It is more of a "With my luck, this will be the day" sort of thing.

It is more of a "With my luck, this will be the day" sort of thing.

My feeling also, though I think of it as waking Murphy. The day you don't carry the tool is the day you need it.....Leatherman, flashlight, knife, gun, etc.

I also spend most of the time not carrying....circumstances like work make it impossible to carry whenever I want. I just learned to deal with it and consider alternate options.

I get to carry most of the time.

The time most recently I did not carry was because I was wearing a suit and the pants loops were to small for my carry belt and not having another option I went without.

I'm now in such a habit of carrying, I feel naked when I don't. Not exactly nervous, but like I"m missing something.

If I'm not at work, and out in public I carry about 95% of the time. My company's very pro-gun, but I don't carry because it's not practical as a welder. Now, if I ever get that office job...

I don't carry when I go down to Massachusetts. I don't think the non-resident permit is worth $100 every year, and since the people I visit all hold a class A LTC, it's legal for me to transport a locked and unloaded weapon with me to their residence anyway. If the SHTF, at least I'll have a weapon.

As for random crime, i.e. muggings, mutant zombie bears, et cetera, I just try not to think about it. :uhoh: Sheeple power!

I don't ever leave the house without a gun.

My small corner of Colorado is considerably safer than New York; I also, however, spent ten years surrounded on all sides by illegal aliens in the People's Republic of California, so I'm not at all unfamiliar with violent crime and violent criminals.

As far as I'm concerned, good habits pay for themselves many times over.

I work in the public school system, so I cannot even carry one in my glove box to work. It doesn't bother me that much during the day, but I get a little nervous having to drive home when working late at a game, etc. I have about a 30 minute commute through some rural areas that could be a little scary if I broke down in the dark. I usually do not carry on my person regularly, but I like to have one in the vehicle especially when making trips with my wife. I don't really worry too much because as I have matured, I try to stay in relatively safe places. A gun does not make you invincible, but it gives you a fighting chance. That's all I ask for is a chance.

I've got to the point in my life where I don't have to be put in any position where I can not have a firearm. I refuse to visit, travel through any state or city where I feel my rights are violated. Been to NYC once and will never go again. Nothing there that can lure me. Same for all cities though. I just do not like the traffic, food, smell, filth, crowds and the prices, taxes and roaches. Oh I've been to a few Dallas,Chicago, New Orleans, Miami, ,Kansa City, St. Louis,Newark,Denver nothing there that amuses me. Give me the country, the mountains, rivers, creeks and woods. Place me 100 miles from another human being and I am happy. And yes I do feel uncomfortable without a firearm at least one in the vehicle. I really felt uncomfortable in NYC, MIAMI and Newark. Saw a dead man shot in Newark laying in the street. More head gunshots working the the ER in Miami than I care to see. All young gang bangers. All dead. I had a guard walk me to and from my car while there.

Back in the early 1960s my Wife and I started carrying pistols in Baltimore , Maryland. Mostly just having a gun in the car. Strickly illegal of course.

Before we were married I was a city policeman, so I had first hand knowledge of just what kind of sub human things were running around.

So I made the decision my Wife's safety is what is important, not any law.

We carried, when we thought necessary, until Texas finally passed the carry law and made us legal. :)

So yes, if I don't have some kind of gun on me or close by I feel like I'm missing something.

I'm not "nervous" when not carrying, but its like leaving the house without your watch ... something is just not right.

In order to be most effective, carrying HAS to become an over-riding habit.

Its like wearing your seatbelt ... I've known many people who where injured in car accidents because they weren't wearing their seatbelt who make the same stupid comment "Gee, I almost always wear my seatbelt, but I just happened to not be wearing it when I got in the wreck."

Like El Tejon I'm constantly on the alert and aware of my surroundings (what my condition white friends call "paranoia"), but nevertheless I do feel nervous going out and about unarmed.

Columbia used to be an upper class town with little or no crime, but ever since the state forced low income housing into the area to prevent its being "exclusive" (%^#& liberals!) crime has started going up. Bands of young "gangsta" wannabes are always roaming around or standing in packs on the street corner, and once - while trying to return a library book to the outdoor drop slot on my way home around midnight, my headlights startled a huge group of miscreants who promptly scattered like cockroaches when the light comes on.

I'm hoping that our Maryland legislators come to their senses and pass the CCW bill this year, but in the meantime I can only modify my habits and act prudently because my only current carry weapon is a Cold Steel Voyager Tanto pocket knife. :(

Definitely at least a little nervous without at least some weapon (no permit nor carry gun yet :( but I make do with a knife).

Just like I'd be nervous if I had to drive a car that had no seatbelts and no airbags, or go up or down a bunch of icy stairs with no handrail. People's margins of comfort will vary; mine are decidedly on the cautious side.

I feel naked, but hey, even going back to NY/NJ to visit the folks, I dont sweat it..

But Ill be glad when Mom and Dad move to North Carolina :)

The increased awareness is good. I am not nervous. I improvise with a knife or something else. Last resort is my bare hands and Nike shoes. I am the weapon, not my gun. (I still would rather have the gun...)

I didn't carry for several years. I got a job working with adolescent drug addicts. I was told, "We know where you live", so I started carrying again, legally.
I have come home from work to find a crime scene complete with murder victim on the sidewalk next to my house.

I carry about 98% of the time I'm awake. I also have a Great Dane/ Doberman mix to keep my disabled wife company while I'm at work.

I don't feel nervous, but I'd know it wasn't there.

Got a Keltec 32 that shoots 100% and weighs next to nothing, and carry at least that all the time.
Carried a shotgun in the Army 1968-71 and still have 2 of those around as well.

Mark :)

While I go nowhere unarmed with at least my situational awareness and usually a good knife, I don't feel overly nervous when I am without a firearm in many occasions.

However, I prefer to take my firearm with me at all times. You never know when and where you may require it.
