Problem? Who said there was a problem! Just got back in from hunting. Got a doe with the savage in 243win.She dropped about 40-50 yards from the shot. I was worried as I didn’t see a spec of blood until I found her.
First whitetail! (It’s been all blacktail hunting for me back in Washington)
First rifle kill! She was quartering towards me more that I thought so I had a bit of a mess when I opened her up. Lesson learned.

maybe the 444 next?
That's less of a mess than mine... I was pressed into using my 240 Wby with an 87 VMAX. It's generally my long range gun. But it kills them at 100 yards.

Wow! Did it penetrate much or just blow the neck out and kill it. I’d imagine the 240 was pushing that bullet pretty damn fast.
I was pleased with getting an good exit with the nosler bt as it was only about a 40yd shot with a muzzle velocity of 2950.

It's pushing 3450. It barely made it inside. This rifle was set up for 300 plus yard shots. The scope is too big for my liking and the bullet too soft for close range. But I didn't have to track it...

Well, I’m glad you shared that I enjoy seeing wound channels and how various Bullets preform on game.

I'd love to try out some Barnes TTSX on deer this year. I've got a new to me press in the mail heading my way as we speak. If I can work up a load before the end of the season I'm going to try either the 110 or 130 grain TTSX in .308 Winchester. Otherwise, the ol' reliable 150 grain Winchester Power-Point will do just fine.

I've also got some 150 grain Speer Hot-Cors that I've been itching to try out. Anyone have any experience with them?

My dad used them in 8mm. They worked the same as any other cup and core bullets.

It done what a varmit bullet is made to do.
Get a 110 gr partition.

I've run those and interlocks. The only difference is two blown up shoulders instead of one. The VMAX works better at long range which is what I usually use this gun for.
It was the lowest recoil rifle I had that guaranteed no tracking. It's not my normal deer rifle. I can't afford to track things this year or risk recoil pushing me off balance. I generally use a 35 Whelen. It's great in the brush. But at 5 pounds the recoil is punishing.

I had to alter my load a bit. .300 Savage, my forever load has been the Speer 150 mag tip over 42 gr IMR4064 with a Rem 9 1/2 primer. At the time I worked the new load for a new rifle last year, 2 of those components were not being made, one hadn't been made for going on 10 years, and my old stock was long used up. My small supply of the existing load were "soft sized" to my M99 and would not chamber easily in my new woods rifle Rem 760.

To the drawing board I went. My brass being tired, I lucked onto 50 pcs Hornady new brass. I could find the Hornady 150 SP, and have used it before, so I went with that. Fed 210 primer as that's what I had, having long used up Rem 9 1/2s. Still had the 4064 though. This is a woods rifle, so I just seated the bullets to the cannelure and worked up for good function and acceptable accuracy with no pressure signs. I landed at the same 42 grain charge, and nice 1.5"groups at 100 yards. Trying to push it 1/2 grain higher got me lesser accuracy. Done deal, 2 deer later, I have my new Forever .300 Savage load until 1 or more of the new components become unobtainable. The sticky lead on the Hornady tips feed better through the 760 than they did the 99. Saving my last stock of the mag tip load for the rare times I bring that rifle out of the safe to hunt.

Report back when you get a deer. I'm curious how well the Whitetail line of ammo works. I imagine it'll work like any other cup and core. It probably makes up half of the stock of hunting ammo in my area.

The whitetail line bullets were accurare enough in my 7mm08, 139 gr, printing 4" at 300 yds, but didn't use them in game. I load the 139 interlock btsp and get better accuracy, these I've used on game pushing 2900 for and dropped a spike buck at 40 yds drt.

I shot this spike with a 100 gr interlock btsp from a 243 won at 30 yds nearly load of h4350, 39.8 gr through his neck, he dropped kicked his feet and pushed himself into a hole, 3 ft away.

The flat base should do as well as the boat tails. 20211121_143533.jpg

Same load for me, 165 grain SGK BTHP in my .30-06.
I haven't bought any components lately though. I have a load my rifle likes and I load them 50 at a time.
In the deer rifle, I usually only shoot 2-3 rounds to check zero before season, and how many ever deer I end up shooting, so 50 lasts several years. I'm good for 3-4 more years before I'm forced to load more. I probably have enough components to load another 20-30 on hand. Getting low on IMR4350. If it isn't available when I'm out, I'll have to switch.
Thankfully the Weatherby Vanguard isn't too picky.
