Who likes the 44 Special as a ccw caliber

As I have said in other threads I carry a 44 virtually every day. It is a 44mag but I mostly carry BB 44 spl. I know the BB 44 spl will kill a deer with one shot [inside 50 yards]and the perceived recoil is less than my 357. The gun is heavier than a light S&W, Taurus or Charter Arms and when I have the money I will probably get a Charter Arms for daily carry. I just like big 44/45 holes over smaller faster 357.

Should be Buffalo Bore that he is referring to. Their website is buffalobore.com so you can see what offerings they have. 180 gr - 255 gr. 1000 fps - 1150 fps.

I have a 4" 624 and a 696. I carry the 624 on occasion, and have carried the 696, but the value of the 696 has gotten stupid, and it's almost as heavy as the 624, so why give up one round?
Usually though I carry a High Power or 1911.

I have a Charter arms bulldog I bought more than 30 years ago that I like as well as my Taurus 445. The Taurus is much more comfortable to shoot and is one of the best buys. The finish on mine is the best I have seen.

I carry the S&W M24, 6.5inch or the 696 4inch....both work quite well...although the longer barrel is sometimes a little tough to hide.

I use a 4" 624 and New Vaquero Sheriff for OWB carry on a regular basis. I hope to add a vintage Charter Bulldog and early 90's Taurus 431 in the near future. Great guns and caliber!

EDC is a CA Bulldog in front pants pocket.
I run 240gr Hornady XTP around 850FPS out of trimmed down .44 mag brass.

Question for Geezer Glide concerning the ammo in your picture. Are those commercial rounds or handloads? And if handloads would you share the manufacturer of the bullets. I have been looking for a large meplat bullet in the 200/ 240 gr all I'm finding is the round nose with a small meplat.

Thanks.

@markallen

Have you looked at Beartooth Bullets? They have some nice big meplat .44 caliber bullets, and they will size them to what you want.

I shoot the 265 grain out of the .44 Magnum, but they have a 250 and 240 grain with a large meplat that should work well in .44 Special.

Look at the first bullet in the list for the .44 Caliber.

i had a 720 rossi and have to admit for a rossi it was a good gun. I also had a 396 smith for a while and now do carry my 696 on occaion.

When both of my AMT DAO .45 ACP Backups proved they were jamomatics at the range eleven years ago, I went home, cleaned them, found their boxes, and drove to my lgs to trade them in on a pair of new S&W's - a closeout priced ($349) 296 and a regular price ($439) 696, getting $400 for the pair of bottom feeders. The 296 was for carry - the 696 was for bedside - both with 200gr GD JHPs in Blazer ammo (They were $11.99/50 locally at Academy back in the 'good old days'!). I banned the Blazers here after one split it's Al case in the 696, next using my homebrews for range use and GA Arms 200gr JHP, both the same Speer Gold Dot bullets, as carry ammo. They are reportedly still slow making them - Starline is backlogged on brass orders. All three variants, Blazer, my homebrews, and GA Arms, make 800-810 fps from the 296's 2.5" barrel, according to the range's chrono. Speer, etc, states that the Gold Dot doubles in surface area at 800 fps in ballistic gelatin - it should be a good 'stopper'.

I carried the 296 in an OWB holster - infrequently, but gripped with larger backstrap-padding Combat grips (Actually, the 696's OEM grips - it sports Ahrends cocobolo!). When R. Mika started making his grips some years back, I had him make me then a pair for both my 296 and a then yet to be owned 642. To fit ~3/4 of my britches front pockets, I had to go back to the 296's OEM boot grips... ouch! I later added a similar but smaller 642 (.38), which fits all of my pockets, as does the 351PD I added last year. Here is the 296, Mika pocket holster, GA Arms 200gr GD JHPs, and a Buck Custom Shop 110 - for scale:

I still carry the 296 when woods bumming - with a 240gr LSWC first up, followed by 200gr GD's. Heavy lead will uncramp with the lite weight 296's rapid recoil - I've proved this!

I recently purchased a .44 Special revolver,,,

I recently purchased a .44 Special revolver,,,
Charter Arms Bulldog with 3" barrel.

CharterArmsBulldog.jpg

I haven't carried it at all,,,
The reason I bought it wasn't for carry,,,
I just wanted something to mate with my C. A. Pathfinder.

What a man-stopper it would be though,,,
180 grain hollow-points disintegrated a sand filled bucket.

What an appropriate name Bulldog is,,,
Short, squat, and powerful.

Charter Bulldog.
200 grain Gold Dot.
Like it a lot.

Really would like to get my old model 10 converted to .44 Spl.

I like 44 Spl in a gun made for that caliber. I don't see the point in carrying the weight of a 44 magnum loaded with 44 Spl.

I have a CA Bulldog for CCW. Also have a Ruger .44Spec Sheriff I am contemplating for this use as well....
