Who Still ACTIVELY Shoots the .30-06?

Sometimes I wonder why some people DON'T actively shoot the 06?

Me too. I think it's because of the .308 lovers out there. They have tried sooooo hard to convince everyone that it's just as good as the '06 (it ain't) that people aren't talking about the '06 as much.

That, and the fact that it's difficult to find an AR style rifle chambered in 30-06.

I did some research awhile back about the effectiveness of the 30-06 on dangerous game. Everything I found said that the '06 is capable of taking every game animal on the planet. Not once anywhere did I find someone saying that the .308 was enough. Probably because it's not.

I admitted to myself that I was not actively shooting my .30-06 (M1 Garand), so I sold it at a gun show last weekend, sold most of the ammo a couple days ago, and have the scope/mount on Gunbroker right now.

The problem with doing that is, they usually come back in doubles and triples a few years later. :)

Totally possible.

But I am a HUGE fan of consistency of controls/ergos, and love the AR platform.

That's why I never shot the M1 anymore. I'd always opt for an AR pattern instead.

Anyone else out there an -06 fan?

Well it appears so anyway, with 6 pages of replies.

I can't say I shoot one every time I head out, but I do manage to pull one of them out several times a year. Being as I have 5 of them, it takes a while for me to get through the rotation along with the others calibers I like to shoot.

All of mine are based off the 03A3, and with the 5 new barrels in the closet, I doubt seriously that even my grandsons will ever shoot them all out.

I had an awesome Rem 700 BDL that next to my 25-06 was about the most accurate of the shelf rifle I have ever shot. Loaded with a 150gr Nosler, (pick one) over a charge in the mid to upper 50'ish grains of H-4350, and those 3/4" little colored stickers folks like to use for price tags or targets, were toast out to 200yds. I sold it to a close friend who has since moved away, but still puts meat in the freezer every year with it.
