I ran into a buddy the other day, and we managed to find ourselves on the topic of firearms. Well he asks me if I'd mind taking him out for a range visit. I said sure, no problem. Only issue was I was broke. So, he pays for some ammunition and we head out to my shooting area.

Now, keep in mind, this is an area I've gone to 3-4 times without issue. When I first went out to this area, I was testing out my Astra A-90, seeing how it functioned and what-not. Well, the owner comes out after hearing the shots of the pistol that day, and long story short, after I thought I'd be in trouble, he says he don't mind me shooting there as long as I policed the brass and trash. No problem, right? Especially when it's a little over a quarter mile to the berm from where I was, and then has about 1100-1200 yards on the other side of the levee.

Well today, we get out there, fire off a few rounds through the Astra, a few shells through the Mosin, Mauser, K31, and my 20 gauge, when someone drives up and tells us we can't shoot there now. This wasn't the guy that gave me permission the first time I was there, just someone different. I told him what transpired above that led to my shooting there, and he said, that to just avoid troubles, we should move to the DNR land about a 1/4 mile away. At first I was hesitant. But when we get there, wow.

As far as I could see, there was open land in abundance. :D So, we start shooting again, I'm teaching my buddy various little techniques, what have you, and he began to show some astounding progress!

So we're shooting, and another car comes up. Buddy says, "Oh, great! Another whiner!" (LOL)

Well they get out of the car, asked us how it was going, and walked over the berm, we were on the eastern side. Well, after a few minutes I walked over to where they were (we had a third buddy who I taught as well with us, he was showing the new apprentice some things) and seen what they were shooting, and they let me fire a couple of their guns. It was a Walther P99 40 cal. and a Springfield XD Subcompact. Veery nice. I am in love with the Walther. Everywhere I've heard about it, the .40 is really snappy, and can be uncomfortable. Not so with this Walther. I put two rounds through it (didn't want to shoot up all his ammo) and I was pleasantly surprised. While it was a little snappy, indeed, I felt almost no recoil at all. Just my hands followed the gun and had no discomfort whatsoever.

Anywho, fast forward to later on around 4 pm, my buddy says that he'd like to keep coming, and to learn. But get this, he says he wants to learn on his own gun as well! So here sometime soon, I'm going to help him shop for that perfect firearm! :D

How'd I do?

Sorry, had technical difficulties, camera's battery died, and I forgot my iPod at home.

You were preaching to a believer...and he came into the fold! Good! A new shooter is always good to hear about.

Nice work.

Mark

ps: get new batteries. :D

I can honestly say that I've never taken a first timer shooting, and heard them say they did not enjoy it.

I admit to have shunned the .40S&W for about the first decade after it's debut, but now I really do like it. The pistol I carry most often (M&P40c) is chambered in it.

I remember looking at an Astra A90 at a gunshow while shopping for a Firestar M43. I never did purchase either, but I liked them both. The Astra looked to be a well-made pistol.

Glad to hear you found a nice place to shoot outdoors. Those are becoming harder to come by these days, it seems.

Snowdog: the Astra is a nice pistol to own. They are sized nicely, comfortable to shoot in 9mm because of weight. My only con with it is both magazine springs are weak and I'm trying to find suitable substitutes since I cant find actual replacements.

I try to take anyone i can to the range.. The more shooters the better! Good job! I actually prefer the .40 over 9mm in the same gun. - maybe i'm wierd! :D

Well maybe you are, mtnhigh, but all gun owners are different lol. Well I found out tonight that my other buddy who went with us, his girlfriend wants to come along as well! Am I good or what? :D
