Who's the "Baddest" TV western good guy?

I always thought Paladin was the baddest.
Eastwood wasn't near as bad on TV Westerns as he was in Movie westerns. So Paladin was the Baddest Good Guy around.

Jack Palance (city slickers :D )
Sam elliot (Lamour films)
Gene Wilder (The Waco kid Blazing saddles)

...

yea, so many good ones already mentioned, but 2 that I also enjoyed were:

Clint Eastwood, et. al., in "Rawhide" and,

Steve McQueen in "The Bounty Hunter"

But, the movie "Tombstone" gets my vote as the overall best, for music, character actors, and lead actors.

"Just wanted ya to know, you're sitting in my chair.."

LS :)

I will go with the Rifleman. He was a great Dad and rancher but when the SHTF he could throw down with anyone.

I will give an Honorable mention to Gil Favor from Rawhide. He always
got respect.

When you mention movies I will go with Kevin Costner's character in Open Range. He could cowboy with the best and kick some butt better than anyone. IMHO that movie has the best shootout scene I have ever seen in a Western. (no disrespect to the Duke, who argueably was the greatest American ever.)

For a serious TV western series - without a doubt - Paladin from 'Have Gun, Will Travel'. For a TV western series with a sense of humor, I nominate James Garner (Bret Maverick) from the series 'Maverick'.

FBURGTX - "John Wayne introduced the first Gunsmoke episode. I had always heard that the Duke was asked to do Gunsmoke (Matt Dillon). He apparently wasn't interested in TV, so he recommended James Arness for the part. Any truth to that????"

You are correct.

MDig, apparently quite a few people can't tell the difference between features (movies) and television series. :)

L.W.

Richard Boone in any tv show he was in. Not only was he the baddest good guy he made a good bad guy in the movies Big Jake comes to mind.

More "Gunsmoke" trivia for y'all...

...Before "Gunsmoke" was on zee toob, it was a radio show.
Who was the show's announcer?

Hint: He was a LARGE actor whose best known character's name was the same as that of a LARGE gun.

Winner gets his or her choice of a pair of crotchless gym shorts or a combination hotdog cooker/male member enhancer.;)

"Old West"

A lone vote for Duncan Reynaldo {SP?} -"the Cisco Kid" and Pancho.

A lot of Holywood flash in the dress department, but Reynaldo, while never showing sinister character, had a "screen presence" that portrayed a tough hombre.

Cisco used his mind in quite elaborate scheems; to me as a child, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

His camraderie with Pancho was great too.

Adios, amigos, see you real soon! Ha Ha

Conrad actually did Dillon's voice on the radio version of Gunsmoke, didn't he? Not just the announcer.
I heard that because of that, he was considered for the tv part, but when he stood up from behind the desk in the jail cell during the screen test, the chair came up with him (due to his size). So they went looking for someone else, Wayne told them about Arness, etc.

Honorable Mentions

Some really great names such as McQueen, Sam Elliot, James Arness...etc.

Those that recall the Old Westerns will remember and I submit these Honorable Mentions:

-"Lady of the house"
- Piano Player
-Bartender

Think about these often character actors, and when all heck broke out, The lady was able to use a shotgun, piano kept playing and bartender kept slinging them drinks.
:D

I mean when the first table was turned over / shot fired, bartender tossed the shotgun to the Lady...
Piano Player often "tipped off" the Good Guy on how he was playing.
Bartender was able to pour steadier, and sling a beer down the bar straighter
:p

John Wayne was always a 'good' good guy. Maybe in the shootist he was a bit of a mean dude, but he was still the good guy through and through. I'd like to draw a bead on that son in the boarding house who ripped off all of the money.

I think it's a toss up between Paladin and Eastwood in Pale rider.

Boy, remember the bad guy with the silver nose in Paladin. I was 8-9 when I first saw him, boy, I couldn't figure why they didn't plug him on sight!
