Who's the "Baddest" TV western good guy?

Zoe Washburn, though she's occasionally slipped, failing to chamber another round quickly enough. Her attitude wins me over.

I also vote for Pallidin, he also had the coolest business cards in the world.

Have gun, will travel, and had the Palladin horse in the middle of the card.

The Duke, of course. Though Richard Boone as Paladin and Steve McQueen as Josh Randall were GREAT TV heroes. Don't recall Wayne in any TV serials.
Paladin often threw in some bits of wisdom, too.

Anybody know the words to Paladin's theme, I remember some. Also liked Tales of Texas Rangers and 26 Men (Arizona Rangers)

Steve: check PM

Stay safe.

COMPLETE LYRICS

Have Gun Will Travel reads the card of a man.
A knight without armor in a savage land.

His fast gun for hire heeds the calling wind.
A soldier of fortune is the man called Paladin.

Paladin, Paladin Where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin, Far, far from home.

He travels on to wherever he must
A chess knight of silver is his badge of trust

There are campfire legends that the trailmen spin
Of the man with the gun
Of the man called Paladin

Paladin Paladin Where do you roam?
Paladin Paladin Far, far from home
Far from home. Far from home.

Only the first six lines were used on the show. The rest are from the album recorded after the show aired.

Trampus was originally supposed to be a bad guy (got hung in the Owen Wister book) from The Virginian.

Heath Barkley. :D

Hoss

But my vote really goes to:
Festus :p

...

I think I might have made an error in saying that Steve McQueen played in: "The Bounty Hunter" and the TV series may have been called, "Wanted, Dead or Alive"

I think his character name was Josh Randell

Just found this thread. Even before reading the second post, my choice was easy - Paladin. It seems it was for a lot of you also.

But, the main reason I posted was to answer coach22's question: "When you were young, did you think his first name was WIRE too?" Yes! I did. I thought it went fairly well with his character. :)

I can find nothing showing John Wayne's connection to "Gunsmoke" but he did play Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in an episode of "Wagon Train" titled "The Colter Craven Story".

I did hear the story that "The Duke" turned down the lead in "Gunsmoke" because he didn't want to be stereotyped as a cowboy.

AXMAN - "I can find nothing showing John Wayne's connection to "Gunsmoke" ..."

Axman, in 1955, when CBS was going to air the first episode of "GUNSMOKE," John Wayne was the person who introduced the show in a brief prologue to the show. He also introduced James Arness as "Matt Dillion." I've seen that short clip many times, courtesy of CBS.

John Wayne was NOT in any of the episodes, thereafter.

"GUNSMOKE," was the longest running network dramatic series in the history of television. 1955-1975.

FWIW.

How many of you will remember this one.

The baddest of all ----------- Johnny Mc Brown

No wounding from him. He dropped em' like flies and thought nothing of it.

The man they call... Jayne

He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

All the trivia books state that Paladin's first name was "Wire", based on the business card, but I've always believed that "wire" was a verb in that case, to wit, indicating that one needing his services should wire, that is to say, communicate by telegraph with, Paladin, in San Fransisco!

Richard Boone was perfect in that role.

I watched all the Old West TV shows as a kid, from Death Valley Days (remember the sponsor Twenty Mule Team Borax?) and Rawhide (Clint Eastwoods' first role as Rowdy Yates), to Gunsmoke (James Arness) and The Rebel (Nick Adams).

I wanted a Mattel "Fanner Fifty", with Greenie Stick-'em caps" (any of you old guys remember those?), yet never got one, but I did have a two-gun (cap-gun ) holster rig that I loved to play with! :)
